Offshore lite warrior or lite sea rider?
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:38:11 pm »

I am 13 years old, but I already am very passionate about RC. I own cars, boats and planes and helicopters. However, as I do not work, I do not have the money to spend on expensive or Nitro boats. I really wanted the Offshore Warrior from Joysway, however I couldn't find anywhere that was selling it second hand (this would be the only way i could buy it). For this reason, i looked further down the range and found the lite version of the warrior. It looked good, but i was wondering whether I should buy the sea rider or the warrior (lite), or even if it is a waste of money and i should go for the magic vee. Even better, if anyone knows where i could buy a second hand version that still works, i would be extremely grateful.

Oh, and one last thing. Please don't post a load of comments saying that if I'm "only 13, you shouldn't buy it as you may not be able to control it", as I'm sure that i will. I first drove an RC boat when i was 4 years old, at a friend of my dads. From then on I have loved all RC things.

Thanks,
Joe

I personally would not dream of saying that at 13 you couldn't control something quick - I get my 'butt whopped' car and truck racing on a regular basis by people of your age.

I can only sympathise with your financial situation and your desires, it was a few years before I could afford what I really wanted due to raising a family.
I can only echo what John said, keep looking but don't dash in to buy the first one you see

On a another note, are there not odd jobs you could do to earn a few ackers? bit of car washing, garden tidying for neighbours etc? that's what my lad had to do for his hobby ...Best of luck!

Thanks for all the replies.
@John MK2- the offshore warrior is good isnt it?! Thats why i really wanted one... Dad and mum both reckon that £130 is too much to spend on a boat, even if i have the money. Unfortunately, as my parents bought me cheap rc vehicles early on in life as i was young and broke things like all youngsters  :(( . As the old saying goes, buy cheap buy twice, and thats what happened. Now mum has a bias that all RC things are rubbish. Dad loves them secretely though :-)) Could you look at the lite version on youtube for me, as dad doesnt know much and i havnt seen many properly good rc boats, whereas im sure you have. Could you? you dont have to if you dont have time...

I bought an Offshore Warrior Lite last year as my re-introduction to RC boats. Unfortuantely it wasn't without its problems, resulting in numerous accidents which were eventually put down to a dodgy ESC and servo but only after I'd given up with it and donated it to a friend who was far more experienced in RC than me and who was known to the shop where I bought it so they took a bit more notice when he complained. Now it's fixed he loves it but if you do go for one of these make sure you lift both fins completely out of the water if you want any manoueverability. If you don't their effect overcomes many of the rudder inputs and the boat fails to respond as expected.

Without the dodgy ESC and servo, and knowing now about the effect of the fins, it's a fantastic little boat that gives a awful lot of bang for the money.

The one that runs at our lake has a off set bubble on the canopy & is weighted on the left side :-) So its self righting. Needs to be as its VERY much overpowered on 3s / 2400kv & a 35mm prop  %%

Inexperienced parents + child's hobby = cheap as they can get (normally) for the simple reason parents know kids can go off hobby's very quickly, so they the parent is smart by not risking to much cash on it.

This may not be the case with you young man, well hopefully anyway, but that may help you understand the main reason why you parents feel £130 is to much on a boat...

I'm sure many here will tell you that £130 is a reasonable sum of cash for a reasonable boat (fast electric or scale model @ a beginners level) but the majority of us will also tell you that £130 won't buy you half a decent boat, just as an example my tug project, being a semi kit not everything is included so i have to spend more to finish it, kit cost £300 .... + extra parts to finish £250 + the electronics (Action of course) £120
Total... £650
My daughters Seaport tug.... £39.99 to start, luckily i had spare electronic parts, but still there was another £40 there spent one way or the other, then paint £30, and a few other details... there was £120 roughly spent on a 5 year olds toy.

These example may help you to teach your parents that modeling is not a 'cheap' venture, (it can be done cheap but the majority of us will spend far more then £130 on a boat) and may aid your case in getting the extra cash.

Selling old toys and stuff is a great way to finance your project and actually will show your parents your commitment to modeling, which will in turn hopefully justifies to them that spending a bit more is worth while.

There are also other things you can or may do, say getting an allowance (do chores around the house, help your mom out with the dishes or washing) think your a bit young for a paper round at present but i overall you need to prove to your parents that your committed to the hobby for them to spend more on you.

All my hobbies i had to do off my own back, from the age of 12, i worked several paper rounds in my days, asked for cash for birthdays and xmas, all was saved to get me started, it taught me valuable life lessons in the process!

kids are fickle, parents are nieve and it all adds up to not getting what you really want until you start working! (unless your one of those rich brats that need a slap into reality {-))

With the offshore warrior, the hull is high quality glass fibre and comes fitted with everything other than Tx, Rx  and Lipo.  A 2S lipo is probably a better starting point to get used to the boat than a 3S, with which the speed is manic!

The Offshore Warrior Lite , is the same basic boat but moulded in plastic rather than g/f , but it does come with a cheap 2.4ghz radio set for quite a lot less than the "full " Warrior.

The same is true of the two versions of the Sea Rider.

Both designs are really super performers . I have a full g/f Warrior and am trying to find a  g/f Rider, although most stockist seem to be on back order for these
