Help for model tug mast
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:42:13 pm »

Hi all,
I am building an Imara and adding some lighting.  I want to put a steaming light on the mast.  I could channel fine wires into the wooden mast or use 2 of the mast stays as my electrical connection but......  it would probably be easier if I can source some tapered alloy tubing to make the mast and just drop the wires down inside.
Anyone know where us modellers can source this tubing.  Mast height is approx 18 inches.

Thanks in anticipation!

if you use the brass tubing from k&s / albion metals ( most good model shops sell it ) each size fits insde the next smaller one , so with enough sections you could form a setpped taper .

I have used fishing rod tips also over the years...very strong and can be made in tapered sections.

If you have a local hobbyshop check out the spare plane parts, parkzone have replacement carbon fibre tailbooms in various sizes that are nicely tapered and hollow and cheap(I think the parkzone scout was about the size youre looking for )

The stepped tubing idea works very well & is very strong. It also can be used as one of the wires for your lights, then you only need a single wire for each light inside the mast .It works perfectly. Mick B.

Thanks for all the help.  I will check out park zone and the fishing rods as these will give the taper without further stepping or further work to get a smooth taper.

Cheers,
Paul.
