suitable ESC??
« on: May 09, 2011, 08:22:04 am »

Hi all,
I have just bought an old boat that has a torpedo 800 motor fitted running from a 6V lead acid battery. It works fine but it has a mechanical speed controller (that i dont like) and want to change this for an Electronic one. Could somebody tell me if they know of a suitable ESC for this size motor?

Pretty much any ESC rated at over 25amps.  Apart from the fleabay oriental types, where amps are seemingly much smaller.

What model is it in the MFA800 is a 12 volt motor and only runs at 4500 rpm so on 6 volts only about 2000 rpm.

Cheers for your replies, do you think this would be better run on a 12v battery instead?

May i suggest Action Electronics as a suitable supplier of an Esc. A phone call to Dave will have you sorted.
Made in Britain and repairable if needed. Its hard to give precise advise on battery voltage. What size weight
hull shape speed req prop etc. Could you borrow a 6v batt ? To try? I use a 12v 7 amp hr Batt on my 40 in
tug and get about 45 min running on my 8oo torpedo. John.

What size and type of model is it and what size and type of prop is fitted?

It is a 4 blade brass prop about 40mm in size, the boat is 45" in length, pretty light in weight, not sure of the model but it is some kind of old rescue launch I reckon, will try get some pictures uploaded for you very soon. as for your reply John i will certainly give Dave a call this week regarding the ESC.
In my shed I have a HI-Tec SP 560 speed controller from an old project i had at one time, does anybody know what Amp this would handle?

I'd second the Action Electronics suggestion. Having just put together thier bits for a lifeboat I am hugely impressed with the quality.

Hitec are fine but cannot handle voltage overload. So for your esc 12v would cause it to fail.John.

So you reckon it would be ok with the 800 motor and a 6v battery?

I just can't see the 800 motor on 6 volts pushing her through the water very well.
