I'm just about to order a Morcambe Bay Prawner (aka Nobby) hull from Mike Mayhew of Waverley Models.
I'm hoping to build it up to a scale(ish) model of the last boat to go out of the Ulverston (where I live) ship builders; "Hearts of Oak". It got it's name from being built entirely of left over oak from a larger boat building concern's closure.
Now, I know that oak planking can be had but I wondered if people have ever made their own? I ask because we have a local charity furniture outlet from which solid oak pieces of "utility" furniture can often be had for silly money...i.e £10 for a small bureau or dresser. Lots of nice seasoned wood in one of those.
But, just how much work would I be letting myself in for? Can it be done cheaply and reasonably easily or, given that it is oak, would one realy be looking at thiknessers and bench saws?
I suppose that other timbers would be involved as well.

I bought a couple of 4" sq cedar stair posts, the woodyard stripped them to 10 mm planks for me, I then used a bandsaw to cut the big planks into small ones - 10mm wide by 2mm thick.

So, the answer is - yes.

Where do you sail? The canal?

Dont know if you are aware there is a club here in Barrow , we use the park lake.

Hello Ian,
I don't sail in the canal no. The weed's rather thick and I'd be terrified of getting something stuck out in the middle.
I sail at the park in Barrow,actually, and also on Coniston. I did know about the club and may have to join before long. Having said which, I was looking at the Furness Model Boat Club's lovely new web pages just the other day and could find no clue as to how to contact them. A bit of an omission on their site 
On the planks front, it's interesting to hear that it's not too hard. I'm wondering if I've any contacts in one of the local high schools where they've lovely machines just begging to be used. 
Perhaps we'll bump into each other in the park sometime.

You had me worried about the contact function on the website - I made up the site and look after it!

The contact is a link just below the jolly rodger - maybe I will make it more obvious.

If you get stuck, let me know, I have a small bandsaw that I use for that kind of thing.
