2 part Epoxy - Silly question
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:14:18 pm »

This may sound like a silly question, but when using 2-tube epoxy adhesive for fitting 3 mm ply bulkeads & platforms for battery, motors mouting etc, to the inside of a GRP hull, what is the best method of applying it?
eg:  Cocktail sticks, ear buds, small disposable brush for each batch . . .
I would use a cocktail stick for attaching small hand rail stanchions to deck holes, but small ply parts are not so easy to do neatly.

I just rough up the GRP apply to the underside of the ply with the supplied spreader and "rock" it into place.

I  use ice lolly  sticks.

If you don't eat ice lollys then hobby shops sell them. :-))

Thanks Bob.  I need to find a suitable spreader (I guess like a micro-spatula?) as none was supplied in the Devcon "2 ton Epoxy" pack I got

They are also freely available in most of the new "coffee" shops.

If I'm doing a large area or seam I usually pour it in and then let gravity do the work to seal it across the joint, and clean it up with my finger, smaller items i use pins, cocktail sticks, or strips of plastic card offcuts, anything cheap and didn't cost me anything since its getting thrown out after use!

Much appreciated all.  It's strange than amongst the reams of fine-print instructions on the back of the pack it just says ". . . and apply to parts".
Not a lot on Google or YouTube either.  Forum 1, rest of World 0.

They also make good planking.

I have a selection of old screwdrivers, you know the ones from the $2 (1 pound) shops that people throw out when the tip goes.   Most useful for messy jobs like gluing and spreading epoxy filler.  O0
Craft shops also sell the lolly sticks cheaply in packets, if you cannot stand coffee.  :-X

I drink loads of coffee, and like ice Lolly's.   I must try to 'raid' Starbucks - Didn't know they were model boat accessory stockists (Tee hee)
Love lateral thinking !

Absolutely perfect - thank you all.
When I said to my wife that I intended to 'raid' Starbucks for some epoxy applicators she said "we have those at work, I will bring some home".
Wood, 5 mm wide, with nice curved ends.  Seems a waste to use such useful tools for stirring coffee  :}
