Suitable Seaport Tug ESC??
« on: July 16, 2011, 08:59:09 pm »

Hi all, I have just purchased the 2 seaport tugs that were advertised on here last week, i have bought these as my 11 year old nephew is just starting out with model boats and one of these will be perfect for him.
Can anybody advice me on the best esc to use with these models? as i am unsure of the motor size, i would prefer a reversible one as he is just starting out and could easily end up in some sticky situations! I dont want to spend a fortune mind as he may not like it {-)

Hi Loinerlad, perhaps a couple of these - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marine-50A-Speed-Controller-ESC-RC-Racing-Boat-/260809477224?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item3cb974cc68

A bit over the top on spec if it's the standard motor but they seem cheap enough, I used an old Ripmax no limit that I had kicking around  in mine.

Just keep in mind though the reverse is weak.
I run one similar on Shelley Foss 36" and reverse is  less than half of what forward is.

For the money ,it works well.

Have access to an Ammeter? you could test the unit for current draw..

the best forward/reverse ESC I have experienced so far is the Mtroniks Viper Marine ,a 15amp can be had for about the same price as the 50amp unit..So it would pay some dividend to get your mits on an ammeter ..Or ask a friend for a hand.

Hi Loinerlad.
I have recently refurbed 6 seaports and amped the motors.  I have fitted a 10amp m tronics viper in all of them with the
origonal motor and prop still in place and they all work fine.  The viper is ideal for the seaport as it is only the size of your
nail and fits in a tight space.  I have mine mounted just under the hatch on the side wall.

                                    cheers Frank
