Has anyone come across this
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:58:00 pm »

I was looking for some material to to cover a new boat stand I had just made for the build of sir Walter Raleigh. I usually use self adhesive draught excluder, but I was in
my local craft shop and noticed they had some sheets of felt all different colours and at 39p a sheet I thought it would make an attractive change. I have now found out to my dismay that this felt seems to react with acrylic paint. I finished painting the hull left it for 24 hours to dry before placing it on the stand, the next day the paint had taken on the patten of the felt, I thought that the paint had not fully dried, so after sanding down and repainting and satin coating I left the boat for 48 hours before placing it on the stand. The next day the same thing happened. I have now ripped it off in temper, and gone back to the draught excluder. The felt material is Polyester Paint used Humbrol acrylic spray.

It sounds as if the paint was not fully dry to me. Although the surface of the paint coat is "touch dry", dependent on temperature and thickness of the paint, it can take several days to fully dry out, as kindly remember when using and paint, be it spray or brush on, the new coat reacts with the other paint/primer, softening this too, which takes longer to dry out as the thinners in the paint evaporates out.
The felt itself is not the problem here, not unless there is a chemical in the material itself, left from manufacture, which you will not know, unless you wash the cloth first and dry thoroughly before use, which i do appreciate you would not expect to have to do with felt material.

id still go for the paint not being fully dry......

Air conditioning pipe lagging is very good as well, it's waterproof and has fantastic grip qualities.
My mouse mat has a picture of Kylie on it so I'm not cutting that up  %) O0 {-)

That definitely sounds to me that the paint is not fully cured, yes its touch dry but many paints take a few weeks to harden up fully, if you put it on the stand after a few days dry time the models weight is what's causing the imprint on the hulls surface.

If you used car sprays then it really does take up to 4 weeks for the paint to go rock solid, its touch dry in 30 mins - workable in 1, fully baked and set.. 4 weeks, acrylics are no different.

Take an old boat and put the felt on the stand for it and see if it dose it to that one, i bet it won't leave a mark.

I have used felt on my stands and not had this problem. I use either car sprays or Humbrol enamels though.

I have used draught excluder in the past, but now use self adhesive neoprene foam strip for all my stands, with excellent results. I agree with Roadrunner and gregk9 regarding the paint not being fully "cured". I have used a number of different types of paints including acrylics and car sprays, but now mostly use ordinary household enamel in spray cans, and I make sure the paint is hard before placing the boat on its stand. Paint probably hardens more quickly where I live due to the warm climate.

I think we have to take into account that pretty much all of us who use car paints and sprays do them at an amateur level by which i mean we do not have a full size spray booth with all the gadgets, (although many of use spray with top results  :-))) if we had such equipment then anything we paint would be put into the ovens or drying rooms which are dedicated to baking the final paint work to harden it up in quick fast time (24-48 hours) If anyone here's ever watched American Hotrod, especially the first 3 series when 'Charlie' was the king pin of paint would show the items baking off after he's finished the paint job, many a time he's had a moan about having to re-do or touch up paintwork when the other guys get there hands on it as the paint still it not fully cured after 24 hours in an oven!

Dear All

thanks for all your comments and I agree I still am not convinced that the paint had fully dried, although it had been standing for 48 hours in 72 degrees. but saying that, now that the boat has been on the draught excluder now for a week with no adverse affects it leads me back to there being something wrong with the felt plus the fact i have never had problems with other materials i have used in the past rubber / foam etc. Washing the felt first never occurred to me I might try that and do a test piece Ill keep you posted.
