Making frames for a plank boat
« on: July 31, 2011, 07:25:26 pm »

I saw a post by a fellow who made his boat frames by first making the frame with seperate boards then put the out line from his paper frame shape onto this wood frame. His wood frame, for lack of better words, looked like a picture frame. Not solid in the center like a full plywood frame.  It was a very in depth post with lots of pics and went through all of the building from lay out to planking to make a finished hull. Can any body help me find this post?  If not, can some one else show me this way to build a steam launch?  Thanks for your time on this,   Firsttime

OK folks, I give up! I can not find the post. I do not need to bother any body with this search any more. Thanks to Mad Mike and Bluebird for their participation in the hunt!   Bluebird, your way of building frames looks to be what I can use with the exception of using buildup wood frames instead of plywood. Your post is very complete. I am a new person to this forum and have been looking at it for some time. I have been modeling for years  but this is my first time into steam. It is also my first time for building a scratch plank on frame boat. Hope to get it right the first time. The boat I am going to build is the steam launch La Mouette. Found the plans on john-tom web sight.   Thanks again,    firsttime

Hi Mike, ya, that is another thing to learn!!! I am not a PC whizz, but it seems to be a way of life on this forum. I will try when I get something to show. I can tell you that the boat will be 42" to 48" long. I will be using an old Cheddar Puffin steam engine for power. Not really sure how much boat it will push.  firsttime

Hi Mike, 68 and happy! Finding out what the Cheddar can do is the next thing I need to do so that I will know how long the boat can be for its power range. I need to know so much before I can even start to build the boat. Not sure where to post for the engine info. This is really a good forum for steam.     firsttime

theres also this from kingston mouldings thats uses the cheddar puffin engine at the top it gives you the size of the boat this should give you an idea of what size to do:

Hi Mike, do not let age be a concern in this hobby or any hobby. Everybody can be a help. The young have new ways and the old have experience. I feel that can be a good blend. In the end we make our own decisions based on what we learn and what we know. The pic you showed is the new style. I have the old cast style. Do not know if there is any difference in power between the two or not. The launch you showed is 45"X9". If I build my launch to 48"X13 3/4" it makes the hull harder to move If I use 42"x11 3/4" it should move easer but I will lose space in the hull. Do not know at this time if that is a real concern. These are the things I hope to find out from the people on this forum.    firsttime

well i sugest you post in the general section. i think the post will get more notice there.  forgive me for my ignorance if 48s too long and 42's too short why not go 45? or is it all about scale?

Yes Mike, I could make it 45" long but the beam would be about 12 1/2". wider than the other hull you showed. This is do to one being a river type hull and the one I want to build is more of a work type hull. FYI, the wide a wake build has a very similar hull to the La Mouette. Take a look at it. It is a very nice build,    firsttime

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=84.0
more people will see it and give you a better guide on how to start and more people will be able to point you to the right threads you need
