CHECK VALVE. ALTERNATIVE POSITION ON BOILER.
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:26:09 pm »

Good afternoon to everybody,
Has anyone placed a check valve on the upper part of the shell of a vertical boiler?
I have been told that the consequences should not be dramatic in terms of the quality of the (dry) steam output.
Sometimes there is no other way unless brazing a new bush on the boiler shell (which I am trying to avoid).

Check valve for? If you want to fit a valve for boiler feed water, then I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference where it's located.

Yes I have and it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

:embarrassed: ...ideally cold or cooler water should be introduced to the lower levels of the boiler....however with the actual volume [of cold water being introduced & being so small in volume] .....to T2 which is the resultant higher temperature.... will diminish by a temperature gradient value that we could not record with conventional instrumentation as used by model steam enthusiasts   :-)) ....Derek

Thank you to all for the replies.
I will then try to fit a check valve on a small Cheddar vertical boiler.

Here's my version of fitting a check valve to a cheddar Pipit boiler. You can see it just below the steam pipe which is clad with cotton string.

Good evening! :-)
I think like Derek.
As long as you enter in the other side of steam outlet. It should not disturb anything! ok2
Cheers!

Giovanni--I just showed Miles my Cheddar Pintail boiler with a "Goodall" type check valve made from a spare blanking plug and fitted in the top side of the boiler. I drilled the plug , soldered in a brass pipe and have the silicone hose over the water port at the bottom of the pipe if that makes sense.

It may have made no big difference but that way the water I pump in with my spray bottle goes in at the bottom of the boiler after warming up as it travels through the pipe downwards.

Sorry for the quick and poor quality pictures :embarrassed:
