MB 22
« on: October 20, 2013, 10:32:34 pm »

This is the progress I have made with my build of a steam engine designed by Malcolm Beak. Dispite one or two problems due to typo errors in the plans it is starting to come together.

Certainly looks a very professional job steam up.......... :-)) ...I can see a few SHCS & cheese heads........will you invest that extra few bob & install hex head bolts & nuts
Hex heads would make so much difference  O0 ....I really think manufacturers supplying cheese head screws in expensive completed engines or kits are penny pinching  >>:-( at our cost
Please keep us posted with more images as you progress......Derek

Nice job and just wondering what material you used for the slide valves as I am currently building a single cylinder engine where the valve will be wearing against brass ,I have used aluminium bronze before with success but unfortunately run out of stock any ideas welcome %)
cheers

Just a little tip with engine columns ,set up your columns in a collett if possible and use a center drill to make a fine edge to seat on the frames ,makes a much stiffer and accurate constuction :-))
Cheers

Hi all, Malcolm lent me a MB22 with steam plant for a while and I fitted it into a copy I have made of the Basset-lowke Streamlinia.  This is a metre long boat and if you can maintain 30 lbs. steam pressure, with a 50 mm prop it just planes nicely.
After a while it went back to Malcolm and with the above info I have converted to an electric motor version now and by measurement consumes 30 watts power at planing speed.

So it is a powerful motor which also chugs slowly as well.

Many years ago I made a mechanical unit for measuring power output and we Malcolm, myself and the late Norman Young, (it was his garage!) we assembled the equipment and measured the bhp , it came out at around 20 watts, but much is dependent on the steam pressure and of course when applying the breaking force the engine slows using less steam and the steam pressure builds up so the measurement was always problematical.
So the best measurement we have is the equivalent one in Streamlinia where the weight of the boat is the same and useing the same propellor.'
We also tested a French blow lamp!  That's another story sufice  it to say I hold the record for the quickest exit from that garage.
Then there is the first automatic boiler that we develped, all interesting stuff, ideas from Malcolm perspiration and electronics from me.
Did you know that neoprene tubing can blow up like a balloon?

Give Malcolm a piece of paper and a pencil..........

Nice build look forward to seeing the engine in action
regards Roy

Really enjoyed reading that Roy.I have found MB to be a very helpful chap which made the build very enjoyable. I have fun the engine on air all seems well looking forward to the boiler build.

Hi Steam up, thanks for that, I forgot to say that the engine was running at just under 2000 rpm.

I have just been reading the prop query on TRV1A thread, this remings me of Malcolm's entry to the first 24 hour endurance "race' about 25 years ago.  Malcolm designed from scratch the whole steam plant even allowing for steam rate and prop slip.  I brought along an electronic tachometer and it was spot on for the rpm Malcolm had calculated.

We did not last long in the competition as we were rammed and sunk by an enthusiastic competitor! We had thought about how to locate a sunk model, perhaps with a ping pong ball on a string but not fitted anything.
What we had not thought of was that with gas firing the bubbles of gas keep going and rising through the water!
So the boat was recovered and the steam plant serviced.  We turned up the next day and were surprised to receive the 'medal' anyway.

regards Roy

Yes - I have bad memories of a racing aircraft carrier. My development and running in that event is on the downloads on the paddleducks  site under "24hour scale sale" if anyone is interested.
Mark I've seen your Kitchen rudder on another forum - looks vaguely familiar!

Sure is I know a a good thing when I see it. Once again a big thank you. The only problem I have now is getting my hands into the hull to get to the rudder, might have to enlist the help of my daughter (smaller hands).

Cup closing servo seems to be straining at end(?) of stroke. If it's a switched function rather than a proportional one, can't see (hear) servo lasting long.

Circlip I am aware of the strain issue (proportional) and it will need some fine tuning to get it spot on.
I was just chuffed that it worked so will sort it out at a later date.
