Arun class 1/12 scale question
« on: December 15, 2011, 12:16:27 am »

Hi all,

I'm posting to ask why no one goes for the Arun  Or Tyne classes anymore? are they too old school??
I see models by design produce a various selection and i'm curious as to why everyone goes Speedline, model slipway or Scratch build??

Are the hulls inacurrate??
They even do a superstructure for either or. Or partial not sure.

Only asking as my Uncle likes Lifeboats alot, And he's been thinking about building for awhile...

This is not for myself i'm having to come out the hobby for awhile...  <:( <:(

Look forward to any feedback or comments, Trying to get him off the side lines and building again  ok2

kindest regards

I just think it's peronal choice really, and as times go on, people like to own the latest gagetry and modern stuff........I myself love the old classic double ender boats pre fast afloat boats, the woodwork and mystique of them really gets to me, but if I were to build a modern fast afloat boat my two choices would be another model of 52-02 the second prototype Arun Sir William Arnold or a Tyne............there is no finer boat than a Tyne in my mind, and the sound of their Detroit V8 two stroke Diesels are something that I could bottle and sell for posterity.....just beautiful  boats.
But each modeller has their reason for choice and the more choice the better in my mind.

as to your question about the hulls, I simply don't know apart from the fact that when I built my Arun model of 52-02 I had to change slightly the partial tunnels at the stern to make them a little more pronounced and changed the spray rail at the bow to a more pronounced curve towards the stem peak.
But that was all...haven't got a clue about the Tyne as haven't built a lifeboat model of one from the grp hull available. However I did build a concept boat from MBD hull and superstructure where I had to extend both superstructure cabins as the Hon sec of Fleetood RNLI station wanted to convert a real Tyne into a private "yacht" concept to promote the RNLI, and I saw nothing untoward with the hull when I made that, but it was a simple mock up that I made, and nothing more than that and definitely not a scale model..

The Arun (12th scale 52' one with the superstructure), at least on the one I have has no tunnels at all moulded into the hull, so is wrong there, and to be accurate, there are only three boats with that particular superstructure anyway (52-09, 52-10 & 52-11 I think).

Mind you, mine pre-dates MBD (and even Dave Metcalf who had them before), so it might have changed now.

I'm the same as Neil, anything orange doesn't float my boat (pun intended!), a nice 45' Watson or Ramsgate on the other hand...

The lifeboat modellers used to produce GRP muoldings many years ago- thats where mine came from, ( 20 yrs or more ago when the model engineers show was at wembley )

hull without tunnels, a one pce deck moulding nad a surperstructure... i sometimes see this still being sold at shows or on ebay... theres quite a few sources of mouldings out there....

Thanks Gents,

Spoke with Uncle on phone this afternoon and he decided on an Arun,
Since he's afraid of anything pc/net/ ? I'll be asking question etc on his behalf,

Oh and Order placed with Andy mdb for 52" arun with superstructure.

1st Question Mbd for running gear or G sitek?

Also Which Brushless motors to use?? something a little over scale speed for when the mood..... Also he asked if Gearboxes where required for brushless motors?? Jell cell batteries x 12v 9ah. which bow thruster to use.

Also does anyone have any lines etc for reshaping the tunnel sections in hull?
I've emailed Mac mouldings for a listing of fittings avaliable.
Still to email model slipway re 1/12 fittings.
Still to email speedline for avaliability of y boat. Unless someone has other place to try??
thanks again for information gents

Models by design do some fittings for arun, and speedline are the only ones to do the y boat

And who is the best with regards to comprehensive decal. lettering?

regarding brushless motors, would any of the tornado thumper range be worth a look? What kind of kv range for scale performance with a bit of extra in reserve??
Any help gratefully received

The 52ft Aruns with the rounded cabin tops were 52-08, 52-9 and 52-10. 52-11 was the first with an Aluminium wheelhouse. Source -  Nicholas Leach, RNLI Motor Lifeboats (ISBN 1- 84306=341-7). I have a Metcalfe moulding and both the hull, deck and cabin are incorrect in a number of places. There are posts on Lifeboats24 giving more details. Also the Lifeboats Enthusiasts Socy usually have a good supply of photos of most Aruns so good details for a chosen model can be obtained for a small donation.
