Steam Launch finished
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:35:11 pm »

Hello All, Here are a few pictured of the finished steam launch I built, called Andrea Jane, from a second hand hull from a club member, a tvr1 engine from the USA and a boiler from Wolverhampton. The rest I made up as I went along. It has run on compressed air and been in the bath to check stability and trim. All seemed ok. Next will be a boiler fill and light the flame to run it on steam. Could be interesting. Graham.

Looking good, I especially like the detail of the flooring, seats and table in the front cockpit. I never seem to get around to finishing off the little things like that. Look forward to some photos of her on the water. Cheers, Ian.

Not meant as a to tell you what to do. But ideally the steam guage should have a vertical u bend with the
guage upright. This will collect water condensate and prolong guage life as it will not be directly steam fed.
no doubt someone with more skills can advise.I had this set up like yours and was advised to alter it. John.

Hi John, That is a good point. The boiler came with the gauge fitted like that and I did not even think about it. I will see how it goes and if necessary change it. Cheers Graham.

Hi Ian, Bernard and Peter, Thanks for the compliments. I did some compressed air running today and had to make some adjustments to the controls to get optimum performace on the bench. I could have gone to the pool today but as at was a typical June summer day here in the UK, i.e cold and wet, so much so that the pub at lunchtime even had an open log fire blazing away, I ended up making some more little bits and pieces such as a bucket and coiled mooring lines. So you see Ian all the finishing stuff is borne out of frustration at not being able to sail. I am now fairly confident that all will now perform satisfactorily under steam. We will see and photos will be posted asap. Cheers Graham.

Hello All, Well I am glad to say that the weather has been very good and so I decided to be brave enough to put water in boiler and fire up the steam plant. Firstly on Saturday afternoon in the garden, on a table and it all seemed ok. So full of confidence I took it to the club on Sunday morning and much to my relief she went like a dream. Here a couple of pictures of her underway. Cheers, Graham.

John s didn't put the correct emphasis on his posting Graham, the vertical bend in the pressure gauge tube is a necessity not an advisable. The reason being is to have a "Slug" of water (condensate) between the steam and the gauge, otherwise it will wreck the gauge eventually and the replacement price for these is quite expensive. Surprised really that the boiler manufacturer neither did it as a matter of course OR informed you it should be that way. If you look at other constructions, the feed bush would have been on the back head of the boiler.

Part from that, it looks absolutely superb.

  Regards  Ian.

Hi Ian, I did contact the boiler supplier who seemed unconcerned and did not think there would be a problem with the gauge. Anyway just to be sure I have re-plumbed and repositioned it to get it vertical and have the U bend in place. Attached photo shows the mod and I do think it looks better too. Thanks for your advice and interest. Cheers, Graham.

Sad the original manufacturer should take that attitude, it even looks better. Congratulations for correcting their laziness.
