AN EMBARRASING MOMENT
« on: June 27, 2011, 12:12:12 pm »

This morning my mate, Cptn Rodders invited me down to the lake at fleetwood for a sail with his new build steam ( electric driven) trawler Akranes.

I had to take my daughter to the doc's as she'd had a bad asthma attack at the weekend, hospitalising her and so was an hour late.

he'd only just lifted it out the water, but said I could have a play with her ( the trawler)........she sailed beautifully until I brought her round for a last pass by, and noticed she was moving slowly, and said I thought the battery was going, and so took  a photo of it with my phone cam.

When I looked up her decks were awash, and she was going down by the stern..............  and at that I jumped in the lake fully clothed to retreive her.

all my mate could do was wet himself laughing, and make the remark......"No b*****y wonder there are so many fleetwood trawler wrecks around with x****** incompetant skippers like you around"

now anyone else had an embarrasing moment this weekend,  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Your not a proper boat modeller until you have sunk either your own, or preferably, someone elses model. You will always be welcome down here in Portsmouth, we are giving out prizes for three or more sinkings in a year!

Oh yes - Club 500 saved only by polystyrene and our boat club water rat:

http://philsworkbench.blogspot.com/2011/06/errol-saves-day.html

Read all about it and see the picture. 500's a very heavy when full of water !

It's horrible to watch a boat go down, especially your own. I thought I'd lost my trawler last year when a sudden gust of wind turned her over and down she went.  <:(  Fortunately she wasn't too far out and eventually managed to hook her with an adapted extending fishing pole belonging to another club member, thanks John. She was brought to the surface after being luckily hooked on the only part of her that could take the strain and weight of it. After giving her a good clean and drying out all the electrics etc for a few days she worked fine, only casualty was a figure now buried at sea. Don't want to go through that again!!! Dave.  :embarrassed: O0 :embarrassed:

I must agree that a ship sinking is a dreadful moment.
I remember seeing a warship sink in the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens many years ago.
It went down by the stern and the bow lifted, in a very realistic manner.  <:(
My own tug sank after putting her in the water after 20 years in dry dock.   My son in law and myself had to go swimming and diving to find her in the mud!   Of course the grand daughters were there to watch the fiasco.  :embarrassed:
The grease in the prop shaft had dried out.  >:-o

The trick with sinking is to chose your moment. My little tugboat has been to the bottom twice because I keep trying to tow the club towboat which is over 10 times the size of the tug ! Fortunately, the vessels have remained tied together so I've retrieved the tug both times.

I'm not planning a third attempt !

I will never forget when I took my Robbe S boat out for a sail and was sailing quite happily round the lake so I bought it in as I was making a roll up something interfered with the radio and it shot of backwards and sank  :o :o  never to be seen again <:( <:(
Still I learnt to build bulkheads in to all my boats after that! :-))

Never mind bulkheads, I rescued a nice thick polystyrene offcut from a skip this morning. Over lunch, I cut most of it up and stuck it in the Club 500 !

We're sailing Loch Ness this Saturday, hopefully all will be fine but getting a bit nervous. Just wondering has anyone lost a model boat in over 740ft of water?!?  :o :o :o

Nope - but then the carp in our lake aren't quite as big as the monster in yours !

Ask Stavros - his pond is quite deep.  Not as deep as Loch Ness, but its all a bit hypothetical after the first hundred feet or so.  If the worst should happen (and lets hope it doesn't) should a small wreck appear on the bottom of the loch, when it gets spotted by a Discovery channel crew in mmpphhty years time, there will probably be an entire series based on it.
Inverness weather for Saturday gives 10mph from ENE with gusts up to 21mph, with a mix of cloud and sunshine, max at 15C.  Looking fair.  http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/inverness_forecast_weather.html

Like an American that helped us in a store once said "Have a good day".  That was better than the nice day wish, because I felt that he meant it.

Since you enjoyed my sinking stories, the latest is a happier tale about a Club 500 that stayed afloat and more importantly, a boat top that returned from the depths !

http://philsworkbench.blogspot.com/2011/07/return-of-orange-top.html

These stories do have a happy ending sometimes !

Scene: our lake, a coüple of years ago. I was sailing alone, my Dulcibelle, just enjoying the peace and quiet, and the sailing! Enter Stage Left, Grandad with about 12 year old Grandson, Grandad carrying one of the large yellow Subs, made either by Graupner or Robbe, Expensive anyway. after asking what Channel I was on, Grandad prepared said Sub, Grandson, who was wearing Wellies, put the vessel in the water, then Grandad slowly drove it away from the shore into the deeper water. Dive! Dive! Dive!! called the lad, Grandad duly moved controls and the boat submerged, wonderful!! It remained visible for several seconds due to its yellow colour, then it went deeper, and disappeared, never to reappear! despite frantic stick waggling and searching, it never came back. Our lake is 50feet+ deep and seriously large, I wonder how far it went before the batteries went flat?

A good number of years ago my 6 foot model of Neptune a 1918 dreadnought sank in rough weather. I had never seen a 6 foot model start to pitch and eventually as the water reached the radio I lost control despite trying to beach her on an island. She sailed on with the entire forepart under water then took a plunge like the Titanic, stern in the air and dissapeared!

We went out in a rowing boat into this deep lake and found the bows sticking up at almost 90 degrees with the stern well out of sight, but were able to grab the bows and retrieve the model with surprisingly little damage!

It took months to rewire as I had many working functions in her including all turrets (5) rotating and gun fire system, but she lived to sail again and now over 20 years later she still survives!

Probably the most anoying aspect was I didn't have a camera with me!

Enjoy

now, here's an embarrasing moment to crown all.........not boat related but certainly water related.
last night my poxy dishwasher went "on the blink" ......it was a replacement for one i bought which had more faults than my clyde lifeboat, and this morning i decided that getting the last one caused me so much stress and agro with hoover/candy.....i was just not going to bother trying to get it repaired and so went to Currys and bought a new one this morning..250 quid with a lifetime guarrentee......

so about 10 minutes ago my wife said "if there's an electrical fault on it, unplug as it might cause a fire, and we'll put it in the garden ready for the new one............"

i pulled it out ............and yep........you're right............... the b*****y thing has already unplugged itself some how and that's why the s*******g thing wouldn't work last night................anyone wanna buy a second hand working perfectly good dishwasher.....derrrrrhhhhhh >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:(
