Motor size for Metcalf Mouldings The Scout lifeboat
« on: July 21, 2011, 01:42:34 pm »

Hi,
I have just ordered from Metcalf Mouldings The Scout lifeboat. I would like to know what motors and size of propeller I shall need and would be grateful for anyone who has made this model to post their views.

Many thanks.

As per the top build - mine... I use 900bb turbo motors on 12v. My scout has 5kg of ballast in the form of two gel cells in the bow just to keep it on the waterline and the motors get it on the plain. They also give plenty of power should you want to tow a cruise ship.

I would also recommend you replace all of the stanchions with brass ones, either bought or made as the white metal ones are a real pain to fix when broken. It wouldn't be a bad idea to tap some threaded rod into the bollards and bolt them through the deck as so they can be used for mooring/towing etc.

Its a brilliant kit and you will have fin building it so please post plenty of build photos.

Oh, and the props are 60mm 3 blade. Ive never played about with other smaller sizes so am unsure as to how much this would improve performance.

Thank you all for your information. :-))

This helps me a lot in deciding which motors to fit as I start to build the kit.

I will post some pictures and details of my progress! :}

There was a 3 part build special by Terry Small in February, March and April 2008 Marine Modelling International. Issue numbers 251,252,253 they maybe of some use, Dave.  :-))

This book may help too by Nicholas Leach:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waveney-Lifeboats-Nicholas-Leach/dp/1902953010

In the build he used MFA Marlin high torque motors but it doesn't say exactly what ones. The props he used were from Prop Shop, 2 inch diameter 3 blade with 2.2" pitch, part number 2022/3 M4. I've put a link to them below, Dave.   :-))
