hello and help with "true lengths"
« on: July 01, 2011, 05:01:00 pm »

Hello

I'm a noobee just starting out on my first build of a vosper mtb with the help of the recent article in Model Boats and the masterclass on this forum.

I have a question if members could offer some help please.

When taking measurements for the wheelhouse and other angled deck fittings from the plan, how do you work out the dimensions of the various sides that are sloping? I seem to remember something about "true lengths" from tech drawing, but that was a long time ago.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there Kevan

Welcome to the Forum.  Whilst building the bridge for the MTB, I made several cardboard templates and offered them in place before I actually cut any materials.   You will find, even if you do a proper drawing and mark everything out - you still have to cut and trim pieces - it is a bit of trial and error - there are that many angles on that wheelhouse.   When writing an article such as this, it is quite difficult to work in one's own mind what bits of information you must put in and what was covered by Glynn's article in Model Boats magazine.   It's complicated not to duplicate areas.

If you read the 2 articles together side by side, things will become a lot clearer

I've been trying to remember how to do this for years having done it at the tender age of 13. But I couldn't even remember what it was called  :embarrassed:

I've now found this link that might explain it...I haven't read it in detail yet but it looks right. Hope it helps.  8)
