Varnish over stickers??
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:39:45 pm »

Hi Guys, I have just repainted my boat hull and have added some vinyl lettering and a pin stripe. Do they really need going over with a clear varnish to seal them? or does anyone know of  an easier way as it looks great and I am worried about spoiling it now  {:-{

Your mate should know if they are weatherproof, if so no need to varnish over.

If it's standard vinyl sign writing it does not need varnishing, already waterproof...

If they are sign writing vinyl they don't NEED varnish, but I usually varnish to make them blend in with the paint finish.  That is if the hull has a matt finish, I use the same varnish over the vinyl.

I make boat decals and designs, the vinyl doesn't come off the boats in 99.9999999% of cases, but if the person who is applying them has not prepared the area before trying to fix them, they may not stick as well. Causes of this are usually grease off the skin, releasing agent as used in moulds for plastic hulls or simply a rough surface.
As for varnishing, the decals do look better if they are sealed into the 'skin' of the boat and will have a smoother edge to them. Personally, I use Acrylic Lacquer spray from Halfords for a gloss finish, but I also have matt lacquers as well.
