Footy Junk
« on: July 23, 2011, 08:21:08 am »

Hi,
Just joined yesterday and it will take a few days to find my way around. I usually race Marblehead class yachts but recently I have been converted to Footy yachts.

I am currently building a Junk with two masts and I have struck my first problem. I need to rotate the masts using one servo.

you could try using a 1 turn sail winch avaliable from most model stores but i think i got of few of mine from howesmodels.co.uk, you could also try cornwallmodelboats.co.uk

good to see you on here rick.
although not knowing owt about yachts I think what you are after is some sort of mechanism under the deck for turning the mast around it's access

can any of you yachties help with either a diagramme or a way of mounting a mast on top of a servo.

thanks neil, its good to be here, found some very interesting articles and some great advice on this forum

i mounted a perkassa forward bofors gun to a standard servo (wired into a harness to work with the rudder, rudder went left, gun went right)

i used a length (about 3") of 2mm connector rod, threaded end went into the servo and epoxied the other end into the gun, worked a treat and has not failed (yet !!)

so on that basis, he could do the same thing however, i would thread the other end aswell and screw into the mast bottom should work, it can be done with pretty much all servo's or winches i suppose !!

I've just made 2 x air rudders from Correx which are connected via aeroplane type nylon rudder fittings, so when the servo arm pulls/pushes the one rudder, both of them move.....hmm, that sounds complicated, but it ain't!

PHOT0'S ON THIS THREAD

If the 2 masts have to swivel together, can't you connect them in the same fashion?
Just a thought.

Oh and welcome into the world of Footy's....my new one came today...that makes 5 of them  {-)

Hi, Rickles

I use a standard servo with 90 degree rotation - and fit a pulley to the servo arm about 1 inch diameter - this drives a half-inch pulley on each mast - so they rotate through twice the angle
Cord is just waxed twine, and the pulleys are

There were photos on the footy forum - have you discovered that yet?

Hi all,

Along with the various suggestions and a flash of inspiration I have figured out how to do the rotating masts.

Whoever included a spell checker on this website deserves a medal.

Now to see if I can include a photograph.

I may be missing something, but surely the setup you have in your diagram would make the masts rotate in different directions.
I don't know about junk rigs but that doesn't seem right.

Both mast levers connected to the same side of the servo horn is the way to go

Hi all,
You may be right about the way the servo is connected to the masts but plans from sepearate people show it set up as per the drawing.

I will let you know the results when I get to that bit.

Hi, Rickles

Both mast levers connected to the same side of the servo horn is the way to go

Ned

No, Rickles is in Australia , so everything is reversed and the masts will be (relatively) pointing downwards :} :}

Your levers will work - but only for a limited angle  - normally servos have about 90degress total travel and if all three levers are the same length the masts will also travel 90deg
In theory you can make the arms on the masts shorter, so that they rotate more angle - but there is a danger of the links binding or going over-centre
go for it!
