my father had a large aviary well stocked with budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels and zebra finches with the odd quail to hoover up the dropped seed  :} unfortunately he passed away when i was a few yrs younger than you are now, i kept it going a few years untill i finally left home.We had a couple of 3rds with the budgies but the show thing was a bit too intense for us, we just liked the enjoyment of the pairings and the resulting offspring. it is something i would like to do again when i get time.Still got a bit of a soft spot for a nice green/yellow Danish recessive pied ok2

My ex 'er indoors used to breed and show Fife canaries, I built her a dedicated breeding house and aviary for them...at any one time she would have over 300 birds. She also had another aviary with budgies, cockatiels, several different sorts of finches and a few quail as well.

Indoors we had the mighty Frank...he was a Congo African Grey parrot, bought as an egg and hand reared. He had a huge command of the Saxon language, and has been on tv a couple of times, been in the local papers and had his own couple of minutes of stardom in a video made by the old Marine Modelling magazine years ago about model submarines. The camera crew took a liking to him after he kept calling them a bunch of (rhymes with anchors) and telling Bernie Wood to (rhymes with muck) off.

We also had a Blue & Gold macaw called Fred for a while, we looked after him whilst his owner went off to Australia for six months....never again. I've never heard such a noisy bird, he could be heard five roads away...a gorgeous creature, soppy and ultra friendly, but the noise...no thank you!

My dad was big into birdkeeping up untill a few years ago.  He was into small softbills, hummingbirds and sunbirds and was quite successfull in both showing and breeding.  He has been mentioned in several publications regarding breeding and care of rare breed lories and softbills

Prior to that it was parrots.... as a kid we had cockatoos, amazons and various Lories and lorikeets.

After the bird flu and foot and mouth epidemics which pretty much killed the sale days and exhibitions my dad has moved over to Marine fish.
