how to make a boat turn
« on: July 25, 2011, 03:54:56 pm »

Good afternoon

i have just updated a speed boat from an out of the box RTR model, the original receiver unit allowed steering by slowing one of then motors making the boat turn (on the hand controller the right stick moved left and right)

with the mods I've got a similar effect from a 2.4 GHz receiver and 2 speed controllers turning is now done again by reducing power on either the left or right stick, (both up to go forward one forward one back to turn).

after testing this new set up steering is not easy or smooth. my question to you how do i achieve a set up that turns like the ordinal wilt the thumb stick moving left and right

sorry no offence was ment,
I didt think this question was as hard as it it. After looking for mixers only 2 types come up in e bay one for RC plains and a home made one for a boat.

And searching google, rather than ebay, scrolling down the google hit list half a page, this -

Fleabay is not the only source to look in, there are lots of alternatives.

.... and you may have mixing built in to your Transmitter. What is the model of your Tx? This is not quite as flexible as a separate mixer, but will work.

you could have both esc's on one stick and use the 2nd stick to a servo which breaks the contact to either motor IE- move stick left breaks contact with the right motor, move stick right and breaks contact with the left motor

what you want to achieve is called vectored steering

The spec doesn't mention mixing - surprising for an aircraft RC system. So, either a servo controlled switch or a mixer.

That looks like 2 x ESC is that correct?

The photos are a bit small, could you repost at 800 x 600...* click family safe! *

yes I'm currently running 2 20A ESC and 2 1550 rpm motors
each set is powered by one Li Po batt

(but one of the ESC got hot and smoked causing a wire in the motor to melt away, so after pay day I'm getting 2 100A ESC and 2 4800 rpm motors)

I've seen one of these with a single motor & rudder - looked like it was working well. It's certainly what I plan to do with mine at some point.
