New Member - RC Boat Overhaul.

Hi,

Firstly, I have just registered with the forum and no doubt will be along for much advice so thanks in advance.

I have in the past raced competitively both electric and nitro buggies but the hobby just became too expensive and when my local track closed down it was time to hang up my racing gloves.

I recently found an old electric model rc boat that a cousin built from scratch and passed on to me when I was younger that whilst functional I have decided to give it a new lease of life and fully overhaul it.

I will be starting a thread with progress report and pictures in due course but first things first and a couple of starter questions if anyone would be so kind.

1. Where is the best online shop to get materials and fittings?

2. The hull of the boat is made from .8mm ply and I intend on ripping out all the old bulkheads and structure as it was balsa and I want to give it more strength. What is the best material to replace bulkheads the with?

3. Once the hull has been prepped I would like to give it a waterproof coating both inside and out that will also help strengthen and give a glass like finish. What's the best stuff to use?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

I normally use Cornwall Model Boats, they carry a large amount of stock and if you order a.m your goods often arrive the following day.

www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk

Batteries I get from The Component Shop. Prices, service, excellent and cheap p&p.

Paint in spray cans from Halfords or

paintsprays.co.uk

Right, here's the start of my build thread. Comments and suggestions welcomed. It was a scratch built sort of fire boat with 540 electric motor.

My plan is to turn it into more of a speed/sports boat with redisigned deck and structure.

1. Hull with original deck. Plan is to rip all bulkheads and structure out as it's quite brittle and replace with stronger, better designed replacement.

2. Deck and structure removed.

3. Bottom of hull stripped of paint and first sanding.

I'd quite like to strengthen the hull before adding the newly designed internal structure. Could I simply coat the entire thing with a resin? If so what should I use and will I be able to sand and paint once applied?

you can resin the inside and outside of the hull (i did it with my friends long beach hull) i also fibreglassed the inside with BID cloth (bi-directional cloth used on light aircraft aswell)

just use a course sand paper and use finer grade paper as you go along to give a nice smooth finish on the outside (the insides not so important)

Change of plan. Might as well start from scratch.
