Hi Terry (Good name that  ;D),

I've used baby oil for smoke oil in the past without any problems apart from the odd look from the cashier at Superdrug  :o

Disco fog oil from Maplins.
It is supposed to be nonflammable and non toxic.
You can also add aromatherapy oil to improve the smell.

Terry, by using only baby-oil you may have trouble after a while with soot. Additionaly it takes longer for the generator to produce smoke. Though I have found a mixture which avoyds soot and "cleans" the resistor which heats up the destillate- plus a very early smoke!
It is baby-oil and turpentine, mixed in a ratio 5:3. If you wish to have a speacial flavour, you may add one or two drops of flavoured oil. I use to take "Green apple", which makes any audiences smile as it seems a bit strange when a warship passes on by, smelling like an green apple...  :D

Hope this was out of any help.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

Jorg,

What element/voltage setup do you use? Bought or home-made?

Hi Rick, I use the bought items from Seuthe (wonder if it is known in the UK). There are various types which run with either 6 or 12 Volts. The advantage is, that they use a ceramic resistor which produces heat. The ceramic is shaped with a small tunnel, though the capillaries-effect "soaks" up the liquid, which will be overheated and produces the smoke.
I have made some tries with selfmade items, but hasn`t been very successfull as they also produce a greasy fog which will fall down on superstructure and deck and soil it.

Yes, Jörg, Seuthe is available in the UK, from specialist model railway shops. Does the 6V system produce adequate smoke?
