test tank
« on: March 11, 2007, 04:41:07 pm »

A couple of shots of my test tank.
It's made from melamine shelving, 12 inch wide for the base and 6 inch for the sides, just over four foot long.
It's screwed together and sealed with ....er sealant.
Emptied after use so the "wood" doesn't get soaked. Better than the bath for domestic reasons but mainly because you can get your eye level with the water line for balasting.
It's only just wide enough for Canning.

I built mine out of the remains of an old wardrobe, it is 6' long by 3' wide and 2' deep, to seal it I lined it with pond liner.
SHMBO would not let me use the bath for testing, plus as you say it is easier when you can work on all sides.

Mind you had problems using it this last year what with the hosepipe ban.

It is just about nearing the end of its life so time to start a new one. anyone got an old wardrobe? ;D

SWMBO had declared no more use of the family test tank after a few scratches appeared. (Wasn't me, honest Guv).  Quite by chance I found an end-of-line paddling pool in Halfords. 8' x 4' and capable of filling to 1' deep. Cost? - £8.50! deflates quite small and lives in the shed. Excellent kit.

I had to buy a cheap paddling pool on e-bay, test tank removed and a large shower cubicle installed. SWMBO can paddle her feet when the weather gets hot.

I've borrowed a paddling pool  that's lying in the garage until the weather improves. Needs a couple of cuts in it repaired first though - it's not the inflatable type. Trouble is there are loads of long and short aluminium rods, screws and plastic mouldings to fit together and no instructions. It's many a long year since I last owned a Meccano set and can only hope that I can find a way of putting the whole thing together satisfactorily.  I rather like the idea of that melamine one. I might even be able to assemble one like that.

good tip for joining poles use different coloured electrical tape on the ends that match ;D
that way you will always be able to build the pool or in my case the tentwithout going wrong just match the colours and job done.

(sorry back to subject in hand)

My tank is 8' x 1' x 6'' deep made from 6'' x 1'' planks, only I screw them together and then line it with thin polythene sheet, then when I am finished with it, unscrew and stand the planks in a corner, dead easy.

The paddling pool idea is OK, BUT, its at ground level, and that makes checking or marking the water line awkward. I have one of those, it also requires a fairly large flat area which I dont really have. I plan to build one like funtimefrankie.
