Hi Tony,

As a member of the Titanic research Society, I thought I'd chip in here.

There are several releases of models by different companies of Titanic due for the 100th Anniversary and you  'Pays your money and takes your choice'  as they say. The one you show is a reputable company and well liked for their accuracy, but the size to go for is the 1:350 scale which will be around £65.  I have this years model still in it's box and have been using it for scaling my 1:175 scratch built version.  (multiply  the parts sizes by 2 !!)

For all the information you could possibly want then may I recommend having a look at our club site on
                      http://titanic-model.com/

Believe it or not, these kits can be obtained from Amazon on free delivery. It might be worth browsing to see the range.

Hope this helps

The special edition Titanic by Academy will be £99. Between this and the Minicraft one, which is based on an old Entex kit, I would go with the slightly smaller, but much newer Academy one. The Minicraft kit underwent a fair bit of mid-life surgery around the time of the James Cameron film, but unless size is your primary concern, I would go Academy. The laser etched wood deck would swing it for me, however, it would have to be a waterline conversion, fully illuminated, in a mirror black sea for me!

I noticed the included etch kit after I posted. That would knock the price up to your figure.  Well worth having this kit as it replaces some of the 'bulky' plastic fittings for more realism.   :-))

Mine is the Minicraft one as it was claimed to be more realistic. The improvements were suggested by members of Titanic's society, who are also correcting Cameron's upgraded New film in time for the anniversary.

As an aside, I'm going to Belfast next April for the celebrations. Anyone else interested  ?

I always had the impression (from reading titanic-model.com and other sites; I've never seen the kit in person, I only have the ex-Entex Revell 1/350) that the Academy 1/400 was much the poorest of the large-scale Titanic plastic kits available, as regards detail and possibly accuracy as well.
But the included etch set looks really nice (it should replace or improve most of the poorly detailed kit parts) as does the wood deck! Unlike many etch detail sets included in kits, it seems to include just about everything you need to detail the model, plus a number of interesting extras such as skylight housings and textured steel deck areas - £99 seems like good value considering the cost of the basic kit plus an aftermarket etch and wood deck set of similar size + quality.

Here's some more photos of the Academy kit: http://jollyrogershipyard.forummotion.com/t38-academy-1-400-rms-titanic-premium-edition
