is there any reason, if my mai powr batterie is 6v and my Rx needs 6v to work, why i cant power the Rx with the main motor batts? im new to boats so i feel im missing something obvious! am i? obviously this would shorted my sailing time but i wouldnt think by much. what is the done thing?? please help b4 i do something stupid!!

You can run your RX off the main power supply but the danger is that if the main batteries become depleted and the voltage drops then the RX control will fail with unpredictable results. That is why it is best to have a separate RX battery if possible.

In essence, I can't see any problem in doing this but if you are using an ESC (electronic speed controller) it would be preferrable to use one with a BEC (battery eliminator circuit) and use that to power the receiver.
In case you don't know, a BEC circuit is designed to do that very thing. You plug the ESC into the receiver and it then powers the receiver hence eliminating the need for Rx battery.

Whilst not gainsaying what Colin wrote, I find that if you ensure you start sailing with freshly charged batteries and are cognisant of the time you've been sailing, then the risk of failure is remote (ie works for me)

Does the BEC in an ESC also allow the steering servo to work or do you still need a battery for that servo to work???

No, if you're using a BEC, you don't need batteries for any other servo that is connected to the receiver.

Dougal99 is quite right. As long as you have power in hand then you can run your RX off the main power supply. I'm just a bit old fashioned I guess! It's horses for courses really.

That has cleared up a problem that has been on my mind for a while. I was not sure if the BEC would run the rudder servo or not, also now knowing that I can save on weight with not having to put the Four AA's for the receiver in my PT Boat.
