rc boat stabilizers
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:44:37 am »

Hi,

I plan to make a model of the ferry Prins Albert but in her war time roll as an LSI.

However I think I might need a pair of working stabilizers.

I recall that these were used on the Sentinal (?).

Any plans or kits available?

Regards

It may be due to the picture angle, but the stabilizers look too vertical to me, all the full sized ones I have seen look to be at about 45 Deg.

If you look carefully at the first photo you will see the stabilizers are on the angle.

Hi,
I sent an email to the company that makes the Sentinal seeking information and they are sending me the two cast blades at no charge!

Hi,
Well true to their word a pair of  stabilizers were in the mail box today.
Model Slipway need to be praised for their kind help.
Now to be a pest.
How are these attached? Each stabilizer has two shafts. One is fairly thick and longer than the other thinner shaft.

These are fixed not working stabilizers.

To alter to working you need to cut off both shafts. drill out where biggest one is and glue in new longer brass shaft.

You then need brass tube as for a rudder.

If you get a couple of tiller arms these will give you the diameter of the brass shaft and this in turn will give you the internal diameter of the brass tube.

Hi DickyD,

Sorry to appear somewhat thick, although I think I can see the idea, could you do a rough sketch for me?

Its more or less all in the photo.

Cut the lugs off the stabilizers, drill a hole where the large one removed.

Glue in this hole a length of brass rod, diameter to fit tiller arm and long enough to be above waterlevel

Get some brass tube to fit tightly over the brass rod and make the shafts.
