D17 H.M.S ALAMEIN build
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:25:12 pm »

Ive wanted to build a destroyer for ages and when I saw a glass fibre hull in the shop there was my chance   it came with outer propshaft tubes but no inside  shafts to them the rudder holder but no rudder and a aft deck with hatch that said DO NOT USE    after speaking to u.b.n   i found out that it was a deans H.M.S DARING  kit hull it comes with a few plastic details but most are frail or broken and there is some damage to the hull but nothing thats too hard to fix   but the research went on in the end I found out that the daring of that class (battle class) also had the same destroyer as my sea  cadet unit is named after  H.M.S ALAMEIN  so I decided I would make her the ALAMEIN she was part of the 4th destroyer squadron of H.M.N during WWII   so with out further delay I declare this build
                                               STARTED!!!! DUN DUN DUNNNNNN

Well good that you got a bargain hull and have a project you always wanted but it wont be a Deans Daring kid if its Alamein. Or if its a Daring then it wont be a battle class.  The WWII Daring was part of the D Class A-I Destrouer builds from pre war whereas the Battles were built during the war after the Emergency War Destroyers and there is s significant difference in hull sizes as the battles were quite large compared to the Darings.   Measure the hull and compare the sizes on the Deans Website.

Sorry KK but as Mike says the old Daring class of the 50s was a different beast to a battle class.
firstly the Darings at 390 ft l.o.a. are 11 ft longer, 3 ft wider in the beam,  and were the first destroyer to be of a welded design
rather than the rivetted hull of the Battle.  The darings also had a very elegant curved bow whereas the Battle had an almost
straight stem.
Both would make great models in their own right but the hulls are not interchangeable
Just for interest there were plans to increase the size of the Battles to include an X turret(aft) but the cessation of WWII forced them to
be cancelled before they got to the drawing board

thanks I think I got my facts a bit muddled there her pennant number is h87    that's a ship called hardy hardy isn't in either class but the deans marines guys don't have any h class destroyers   but I know it was a kit   just spent an hour trying to find it with no luck but the bow is the same as you described the daring being will post some pics

The G class and the H class were very similar and Deans do the G class.

HMS Grenville.

HMS Hardy Pennant H87 of 1936 was a flotilla leader and slightly bigger than the rest of the vessels of her class.

The Deans HMS  Grenville is not the 1935 ship which was similar to the 1936 Hardy but the later war emergency destroyer which was very different. The Deans HMS Hardy is a post WW2 frigate.

The Deans HMS Daring of 1932 is closest to HMS Hardy of 1936 but was not a flotilla leader so hence slightly smaller.

The late WW2 Battle class and post war Darings were again very different from the earlier vessels and from each other. They had pennant numbers beginning with D.

If you have got a hull with the H87 pennant number then it indicates the pre war HMS Hardy which maybe started off as a Deans HMS Daring.

Measure the length to check. If it is 1.02 metres long then it is a Deans HMS Daring of 1932.

found what i think the hull is

D Class Destroyer (Hull)
[485]    £76.60

SCALE 1/96 Length 49" beam 6"

These 3,000 ton destroyers were the largest in size and tonnage in the Royal Navy. This class was a design improvement on the "Battle" and "Weapons" class and were of all welded construction.
The Darings have been known as "Super Destroyers" or very Light Cruisers and were often known as "Darings" in a separate class.
This hull is moulded with all port detail, propshaft exits and "A" frame location points.
The hull is moulded from Maritime Museum plans or will suit the plans by M Reading available from M.A.P.

That is not L87 then.

As Mike Race says, measure the hull and then you will be able to check the dimensions on the Deans website. Then you will know exactly what you have bought.

(By the way, the smiley key on your keyboard seems to be sticking - you need to get it serviced)

Please KK put us out of our misery and end this post - just how long is the hull in your possession - does it tie in with the
measurements of a deans 1950s Daring.

id have thought it would have been easier to have used glass fibre resin and matting behind the portholes before filling them from the outside , less chance of them leaking later !

I wasn't filling the portholes just some of the cracks where write next to them  if you look at the posts below some of the cracks are visible  the problem i have with the port holes is half of them haven't got anything in the ones that do have really nice brass ones so I'm trying to find more instead of taking the original ones out but will use  glass fibre  when all of them are in
