What motors for 1/12th Scale Mersey?
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:01:22 pm »

Now that I have made my choice on "Kit". I still need some recomendation on motor drive.

I do prefer brushed motors to be honest, purely for reliability as either the brushless motor or controller or worse still "lipo pack" give in a bit too quickly for my liking, So what motors would you all recommend.

I dont mind fitting geared motors if they would be better suited, rather than going for super huge/heavy  direct drive job's, as geared motors do a fair job of turning larger props over at a reasonable rate, but what would you suggest and then of course, battery volt/capacity to give a reasonable sail duration.
A sound system will definately go in, lighting I already have sufficient in stock to illuminate almost everything possible [ha ha]. These will be led's  for size and low battery useage.

My "chosen subject" will be 12-26  Moira Barrie, Based currently at Barmouth.

[its the nearest subject to me for photographic and detailling purposes]

when I had my Mersey I used 550 motors with the MFA belt drive
on 6v SLA batteries went pretty well  :-))

Hi Greg

Progress on my "Moira Barrie" to date, she will eventually be fitted with a pair of 800kv brushless motors...

Nice looking build so far Russ.
Do you have the build thread on this forum?

I have a 4 week wait for mine to be produced and delivered so to speak, so trying to get everything sorted out on the "parts list" before things start to happen.

We do see quite a lot of brushless powered boats come and go at our own club pool, but they dont seem to last long before either  the motor burns out, the esc throws an utter wobbler and melts, or the battery packs blow a cell, causing extensive damage to hulls, So Id much prefer to keep to a brushed motor of, er "adequate size/capacity" that will last the hull out

I know and appreciate some people prefer to go "big is beautiful"  with direct drive motors, but on the other hand, a reasonably sized motor, with gearing can work out fine too. I prefer gearing [as in gear wheels/cogs]  to belts and pullies as belts can loose tension and wear, plus they do put a lot of load on the bearings to keep the belt at correct tension.

Just spoken to the suppliers of the hull kit for their recommendations on motors,

they suggest  twin graupner 900's

OR
twin graupner 700 BB turbo's

Looking at the "spec's" of these motors, there is quite a difference in rpm outputs, as the 700's are higher revving, but a lighter wound motor.

Would it not be better if this is the case to go for twin mfa 850's ?
