Where to Get My First R/C Boat
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:07:29 am »

I've always had a fascination for boats and since retirement spend a lot of time on the Broads.

Always wanted to get a remote controlled model but don't have the skill to build or the knowledge of the R/C equipment needed.  When I look in model shops the 'ready to go' boats look more like toys than models.

Where is the best place to look for a first boat that can be upgraded ?  I live in Norfolk.

Have a look at the websites for Howes of Oxford, A Model World and no doubt a few others who will remind me of themselves.  There are some quite nice almost ready boats out there, some would benefit from a biy of work, some are good as is.  The price is often a good guide.  The bottom end of the market usually has really horrible radios, some boats are amenable to upgrading, some are not.

Hi Bill,

What type of model boat are you interested in Bill? Sail, Tugs, warships, trawlers... anything in particular?

Thanks for the comments to date.

Looking around I am particularly interested in Thames/Broads cruisers and sports boats so nothing too elaborate.

Popped into Eaton Park, near Norwich, this morning where there was a naval day on the boating pool - fascinating !  Talked to a couple of the owners but it is difficult when you know so little about the subject.
