Hello All

I am new to this forum and have just returned to model boat building after a break of about 30 years. Having suffered a stroke and having to take early retirement as a result I have been contemplating building a boat to sail on a local lake. A local club sails on the lake and I have visited to chat to them a few times - they seem a friendly group. The lake is about 50 yards from my house so getting there is not a problem! I was thinking of building an electric powered model but fate has just stepped in.............

A family member visited this weekend and gave me a large box. The box conatined an unbuilt cheddar pintail steam engine kit. I told them how much the kit was worth but they insisted i keep it.

The plan is to build the steam engine kit and to get hold of a Kingston mouldings 'River Queen' launch hull.

Cheers

good luck to you on that one, John..should make into a lovely peaceful and idilic sailing model.

just be sure that your club will allow steam models to sail on the lake, either with or without a steam boiler certificate.

Some clubs and local councils are getting funny about steam.

Please put your build project on here, I'm sure I speak for most that we would love to see it in that process.

neil.

Sounds like you have the makings of a great project. There will be plenty of advice forthcoming from the steam section if you need to ask and the quality and service from Kingston is second to none. I built my River Queen with the Graham Industries Gage VR1A single cylinder engine. In order to reverse it without stopping the engine (as singles will not always restart) I fitted a reversable prop but you will not have that problem with the Cheddar twin. I built mine initially with a 6 x 3 horizontal boiler but when I need that for another project I put in a vertical boiler from Model Components in Australia a put a PM Research whistle on the top which gets the kids pretty excited when sailing. Have a look at the Clevedon Steam website www.clevedonsteam.co.uk which is run by Jerry, a former Cheddar employee. You will find lots of useful accessories there. Best of luck withe build and dont forget - lots of photos posted regularly. Cheers, Ian.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice.

There a couple of chaps who sail steam powered models with the club so I guess that it is ok to operate steam on the lake. Steam power really interests me.

I will post some build pictures in the steam section when the build gets underway.

Cheers

I have posted some pics of the cheddar pintail in the steam section.

Having contacted a local model boat enthusiast I have found that there are two clubs in my area and both allow steam power. I plan to join both.
