Plans
« on: October 07, 2011, 12:14:30 am »

When I were a lad, I could order plans from David MacGregor.

...And now I can't. I see that they're all here, at the Brunel Institute, but only - it seems - on a "come and visit them" basis. There's a pile of stuff in there by Ough, John Lambert, and all sorts.

I could also purchase plans from Sambrook Marine, whose output got bought by WEM, but now those plans seem to have disappeared.

Outside Jecobin (Cold War and newer vessels) and John Lambert's solo work (WWII and smaller vessels) RN military ship plans seem scarce in the UK. Is there really no source for WWI ships outside the (pricey) NMM?  >>:-(

Loyalhanna/Taubman took over the Sambrook range so it's worth checking them out.

What about Glasgow University Archives and the Mitchell Library for Clyde built ships.

I know from experience that the Unviversity archives are very helpful. I have spent a few days there going over drawings, and their charges are/were very reasonable, for any that you would like copies of.
When I used them they charged per foot length of the copy, so a reduced size copy was less expensive, and can then be enlarged as required at a later date.
I used a company who produced Ordnance Survey maps, and again the charges were reasonable.

Hi  Golin,

Yes, it was about 4 or 5 years ago, and I could agree with your views on the Mitchell Library.

I contacted them about drawings for the SS Bencruachan, one of the ships I sailed on, as I had two sheets of the drawings but wanted the sheet showing the hull lines and frames.
These had been obtained, by someone else, from the Mitchell Library at an earlier date.
Their response was that they had the drawings, but they were too large to copy.

Apologies about staying off the original topic, but in defence of the Mitchell Library, I must say I had  great service from them, both through email & in person, when I was researching/buying plans for a project earlier this year.
No connection with the place, just a satisfied customer :-))

And Loyalhannas listings are as reliable as MHS or whatever it's called this week. So many privateers selling "Copyrighted" plans all over T'internet, wonder why the relevant holders don't do something about it?

John,
I think it is all above board. I believe Dave Metcalf has done some sort of deal to allow him to market the plans. Certainly that was the impression I gathered from him at the Warwick show last year.
