Help with motor and speed controller please ......
« on: October 13, 2011, 09:12:01 am »

As I mentioned in this thread .. http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=32973.0   I am currently renovating my old ring netter Eileeen. Now it's been 26 years since I built this and having completed the external re-rigging and painting work I now want to overhaul the electrics, mainly by buying a new Speed Controller from Electronize.

Now the old controller was damaged and discarded and I'm not sure which new model speed controller I should be buying. The model is 33" long overall, uses a 10ah 6 volt lead acid battery and has the Como motor in it that is shown below, which after 26 years I can't remember what rating it is,  :embarrassed: though it still seems to work fine.... :o .... Can anyone tell me which model Electronize I should be looking at for this boat and what motor they would guess it is ? ... many thanks... :-))

I would be amazed if the motor took more than about 5 amps.  Easiest test (not the HSA approved one) is to hook it up to the battery via a 5 amp fuse and grasp the shaft with a hand while wearing a gardening glove for a few seconds.  This will put a maximum reasonable load on the motor.  If the fuse doesn't blow, you know how little current it takes, if it dies, repeat with a 10A fuse.
Once you know the current draw, just ask for the next rating up from that figure, probably the 15A type.  Keep the fuse in the battery lead.

Malcolm, actually I did many moons ago put in a 10amp fuse in the battery connection, which makes me think I worked out what it needed somehow then.... if I were to buy the 15 amp version, presumably that would cover both eventualities ? ...

Richard, no particular reason for the Electronize version, other than electricity isn't my strong point  :embarrassed: and I believe they are easy to set up?  ... would you recommend any other make for a particular reason? bearing in mind... I only do 'simple' with electrics ...   %%   :-))

Ive been using  Electronize  since they where first introduced, tried other's but for normal sailing they are good only popped one put the wrong prop on and didn't check to see if it was getting hot fixed it No problem, I have also built quite a few and they all worked fine if you are handy with a soldering iron and want to save a bit.
there are plenty of other's that work well it's up to you

If it never managed to blow a 10 amp fuse, the 15A ESC should be just fine.  The main nice thing about modern ESCs is that what will control a big motor will usually control a small one.

Most ESCs these days are easy to set up, needing not much more than the ability to connect the wires in the right places, most need to "learn" the controller so that they know where "off", "forward" and "reverse" are.  Some have built in cleverness, some need a training button to be pressed, I think that the need to poke a plastic screwdriver down holes in the case to adjust the centre and deadband has gone.

I normally use the Mtronics Viper waterproof speed controllers and where amps permit I use the plug and play versions.

This is for just a simple set up, if I wanted a top class set up I would go to ACTion electronics who offer superb personal service ,advice and exceptional products.

Well I just gave Electronize a chat and ordered their 15amp version which should not only cope with this boat easily but be transferable to my next when I build it, without too many problems ... I've got plenty of room in the boat and it should be well within my electrical abilities to install safely ...... fingers crossed...  :D  It's going to be nice seeing it on the water again after all these years..  :-))
