Need help with design
« on: October 16, 2011, 08:25:04 pm »

Hi everyone!

I'm having a subject called Technology and Research (translated from Norwegian: Teknologi og Forskningslære) in school this year. The subject is mainly about building a ship model, which will be equipped with motor and rudder. The design must be from a real ship. The scale of the model must be 1/100 and max length 90 cm. The model must be able to carry a load of 3 kg. It will be made from a special type of polystyrene.

The first thing I need to do, is to find a suitable design. We are using Freeship and I need a linesplan-file. We need this for the cutting process and for calculating stability and resistance. The ship will be tested for handling, stability and speed. The best will be a design that can handle all well. Most used are supply and container vessels.

I will be very thankful if someone could give me some advice for what kind of ship I should choose and maybe some plans.  :-)

My own personal choice would be a waide beam, short stubby little boat, something like a tug or rig supply vessell, that has plenty of load bearing deck space with a good hull displacement and plenty of freeboard.

but I'm sure others will come in with a thousand and one different ideas......you'll have to sift through for your own personal choice.

good luck with the project. :-))

As the scale is set at 1:100, with a length of 90cm, this means a ship of 90 metres length.  At that scale, the required payload equates to 3000 tonnes, so you will be looking for a ship of about 4 or 5 thousand tonnes total displacement, probably a cargo ship such as a large coaster.  There might be something useful here -  http://z11.invisionfree.com/shipbucket/ar/t3165.htm

Thanks for replying! I'm new to this kind of model building, so this is a great help for me. :-) I've found some DELFTship-plans for a rig supply vessel. I will most likely use this, as it is my favourite design.
