My jigsaw will cut timber more than 50mm thick, and it's just a simple Bosch, so 6mm is a breeze. I think most jigsaws will handle 6mm. I assume the 6mm ply is for the frames?

Darren.........an electric  jigsaw will certainly cut your 6mm thick x 5 ply timber....but there are a few simple tricks

1. photo copy the frame profile x the number of frames
2. cut out & glue each progressively increased size/shaped paper frame template to the ply leaving just enough space between profiles...... :o
3. select a suitable TPI [teeth per inch] jigsaw blade
4. MOST IMPORTANT is to adaquately secure the sheet of ply with G Clamps to a substantial table....& gently cut out each frame on the overhang.......& repositioning the sheet & clamps after each cut

Good luck........you will get there  :-)) ....... Derek

Ok thanks guys, yeah the 6mm is for the frames and then I was going to use 2 or 3 mm for the outer skin, yeah I'm going to be building it for my jet drive to be fitted in it

Use spray on glue to attach the paper templates to the ply not water based glue as this will distort the paper, as I found out to my cost once.

The "Pritt stick" type glue is quite good too

To be honest I haven't yet I have had so much trouble with wood and with actually getting my jet drive as they had to send me another one I brought some wood that was way to thin then when I got it home it was warped so decided to go thicker and 5 layer I don't want to make it to small but I don't want to make it to big I only have the mini jet so it can only run 540 sized motor but I don't no either to run brushless or brushed yet

well my boats are bout 60 cm long. i use 1.5 for the outside and inside, in some areas i may back with balsa on the bulkheads but then i only have probably 2 bulkheads. Depending on what type of hull you are making i presume it will be a planing type and for the size motor and jet pump you have at a guess i would say 6 mm is too heavy. To get a fair amount of speed out of your boat it doesnt want to be anymore than 600 grams but thats without hardware and batteries. what have you got in mind for a hull type and size?

HI DARREN
6mm ply is OK    BUT   try to use laminated ply not the ply b&q sell its a core ply so tend de lament and splinter when cutting a scribe the out line with craft knife.
a good timber supplier who good ply products should help you    theirs a few on , or in local yellow pages,
here in my area i can get a sheet 8x4 for £26 NOT CHEAP  but the best also  a 4x4  sheet of 1mm  £ 22 a you get a lot of boats out of that,
a cheaper way is to look out for shop fitters work shops and joinery firms they have loads  of bits and pieces i no i am a retired  joiner, .....LARRY..

well if you take in mind what type of boat you want to build then go from there. Me personally would build one of these if i had a jet to hand:

fairly simple hull, just needs some figures, a steering wheel, mock engine and bit of tubing.

not to disagree with larry but which wood you choose depends on what type of boat your building. ive used this guy for 1.5mm lite ply:
