Stolen Boats
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:12:05 pm »

Two boats were stolen on Wednesday October 26th from a member of Boston MBC by TWO sneak thieves on cycles.
They were clever enough to not to be noticed by club members but were caught on CCTV camera by the Port Authority Surveillance team.
One Boat (the original laser cut Sea Scout from Vintage Model Boat Co and named The Fuschia) was repainted Mediteranean Blue instead of the green in the web site picture and carries the builders mast flag of DD. This boat was fully fitted and ready to sail.
The other boat (named Mickey) was a static build converted to RC and is also Mediteranean Blue but was deviod of any batteries.
Both boat are about 24" long.
Also taken were a 2.4GHz Planet Tx (for the Sea Breeze) and a 40Mhz Tx for Mickey.

If anyone sees either boat then let me know and I will pass the information on to Dave.
The moral of the story is not to leave your car boot open as "Diddy" Dave has found to his sorrow.
(The theft has been report to the police).

Nice colour edit , Martin but you forgot the rudder (a "Skeggy" car boot could be a good bet).
On behalf of "Diddy" Dave Thanks

Good luck to him with the police. If my experience is anything to go by, even losing models and equipment well into the £thousands didn't bring much in the way of interest or help. BY.

Hi Guys,
My true story was last year at a show in the South, I had nine models of kits that we manf. taken from my stand over night. The discovery was on the Sunday morning, the organiser was contacted who then spent the next three hours thinking about it. Meanwhile the local boys in blue were contacted who took the usual stand of details and a number for insurance over the phone. We pointed out that there were two boot sales going on locally and that there was a very good description of the offenders. However the police decided that they would pass on the info to the police woman who dealt with this sort of thing after the week end. After I suggested that a couple of us would go to the boot sales and try and get the goods back, we were warned that if we did go and cause a frackarse, it would be us that would be arrested!
At this point I was thinking chocolate fireguard - waste of space - drink in a brewery ect.

Then looking around noticed CCTV on the roofs of the school that the show was at. Great, one of the cameras was pointing down on us, there must be footage. The answer from the organiser was that the cameras weren't working due to vandalism!! Ok, lets go and see the security person for the school and the show.........a woman who was in her sixties turned up and mentioned that she had heard a noise during the night and shone her torch along the line of stands but didn't see anything and put it down to foxes!!!!

Ok, I then spoke to the organiser about their insurance, "Sorry, but we don't have any insurance" This is a large well established show for goodness sake!
The show closed and we heard nothing from any one and put the loss down to our own stupidity. Here is were it got interesting, about a week later I received an email from a customer in Scotland who emailed me that some of my models were on E....y.
The long and short of it was that they had been sold for a fiver at the local boot fair the day after the theft and the guy who bought them had put them up for sale. Needless to say, I got them back but with four still missing.

We went to the show this year and told all of the trade and exhibitors that they were at high risk as there was no insurance in place, and the security was a sixty year old woman with a torch!!

The moral of this story is - check that there is insurance in place at a show and that there is some form of security, if not, make sure that you lock all of your models and valuables away at night.
Don't rely on the organisers %% or the police :police:, my experience showed that they will not help you. Make sure that you do not leave anything open to be nicked.
Otherwise......................... <*<

Graham

e bay, car boots and cash converters (pawn shops) are well worth a look most stuff is passed on to pay for drugs or to get money for drugs.

as for saying the police do nothing, there is only so much that can be done to investigate a crime if there are no witnesses, no cctv, no forensics, no trail for dog to track and no other information to identify an offender then what do people expect th epolice to do?  most polioce officers are tied up recording statistics instead of being free to catch bad guys.

But I think Graham is right that there are uncomfortably too many reports of instances where police have been pointed in the right direction in time to do something but have declined to act. I have experienced it myself with attempted credit card fraud - because it did not succeed 'no crime has been committed' despite giving the address to which the illegally applied for replacement cards were being sent to and were lucklily intercepted by a public minded alert neighbour.

As for the bank which happily sent off 'replacement' cards to an address other than my regular billing address to which it had been sending accounts for the last 30 years the mind just boggles....

Nothing new about police inaction.  25+years back, when I was pretending to be a manager, my mate who sat across the office from me got depressingly regular reports of kiosks being robbed.  Not just the cash loss, but the continual repairs were a king ransom (for a small kingdom).  A local trader had spotted the scrotes at their work.  He supplied their car type, model, colour, registration number, where they parked while at work, times and days and a description of the perps.  Total disinterest from the uniformed branch of the tory party, until it was party conference time.  Then, seeing that their masters were due in town, they were interested beyond belief.
Its all down to motivation, and something that they can comprehend.  I feel that had it been drays full of crates of booze that were being robbed, they would have formed a disorderly queue to investigate.

There does seem to be an insidious collective agreement between the parties involved to 'manage' the problem away to the frustration of the victim. Banks are clearly reluctant to acknowledge the level of fraud that goes on. They initially say it must be your fault and then when pressed simply compensate you and pass the cost on to their customers in increased charges. So convenient for all concerned except the poor b****y customer! Meanwhile the toerags continue to make large sums of money at little risk to themselves.

Bill Bratton's Zero Tolerance' policy has much to recommend it.

In the case of my attempted credit card fraud the perpetrators were a bunch of Somalis living in North London. Had the police had the nous to raid the house there would probably have been enough evidence to convict them after which they could have been returned to where they came from and forget their 'human rights' - I wish!

Check all of the Pawn shops in and around the area where the boats were stolen and give them photos and contact info if they should show up at the Pawn shops.
