Fixing Hull Leak
« on: October 30, 2011, 08:11:31 am »

30 years+ ago I built a Graupner Elke with an ABS hull and a wooden stern post with a passage for the prop shaft. I don't know if the wood may have dried out, but I have been trying for weeks to find the source of an incoming leak in the stern.
I replaced the prop shaft & lubricant; I applied two-part epoxy to the external interface lines between the wooden stern post and ABS; also on the external interface between the prop shaft and stern post; also internally between the wooden stern post and ABS.
But it still leaks! What have I missed? What can I do?

Use 2 pack polyester resin to coat the inside of the hull.

Brush it onto the general area of the leak where you can and for the unreachable parts pour mixed resin into the hull, then carefully tilt and turn the hull to run the liquid where you want it to go.     (avoiding moving parts of course ! )

It will cure in 20 minutes and you can then test it for leaks, repeat if necessary

Have you installed the rudder yet? If so, have you greased the rudder post and propshaft?

Andy :-)

Again the warning, be careful using a styrene polymer to repair a styrene molding.

Try Captain Trolleys creeping crack cure, which is availible on line or from any boat chandlers. This will run into a crack and form a permanent seal.John.

Graham,
If you can strip her out internally you can part fill her with fresh water and see where the water comes OUT of the hull.
Drain out and dry thoroughly, then repair the hull externally.

Use 2 pack polyester resin to coat the inside of the hull.

Will polyester resin (this is the sort used for GRP, am I correct?) bond to ABS, then? I had the impression that it didn't (at least not very well) from what I've heard elsewhere, but I may be confusing it with epoxy.
I also have an ABS hull needing repair (in this case, the location of the crack is known and isn't causing a leak, but needs to be fixed ASAP before it gets worse) and the location of the crack makes either a patch or filler putty impractical - painted-on resin seems to be the best solution, providing it works!

Hi Edward,

Can't you paint the crack shut by çarefully 'soaking' the crack with an ABS solvent like MEK, or Acetone?

I have a film jar with ABS scraps solved in MEK and use that goo to cover cracks (and other mishaps) in my plastic hulls.

Regards, Jan.

it can in extreme conditions Edward, wrinkle or even melt HIPS and ABS styrenes, and should be avoided if another alternative can be used.It can eat into the plastic or in less extreme cases, because of the heat given off in the hardening stage, distort the plastics which are heat formed plastics anyway.
