A few pics of some beautiful workmanship in steam.
« on: November 08, 2011, 05:40:14 pm »

A few pics that maybe of interest for the steam enthusiasts. Built by the owner (pictured) this hardy couple braved a cold wintry morn on the Sawley cut near Long Eaton.  Brewed a hot cuppa from the boiler, a few running tweaks and off again.  I was amazed at the size of the four blade prop and more so the speed it attained on the trent - surprised not to see a water skier in tow!  Not a sound could I hear barr for the ripple of water.  Was very taken by it, hope you enjoy.

Tony,

Being Co-pilot and Chief Engineer of one of these (albeit more from the Vital Spark end of the fleet) I come in contact with several steamers - and I'm not just talking about the launches!

Note the age of the engine and it's still going strong. How many Yamaha, Evinrude etc will last the same distance?

Also note the twin cylinders providing pretty reliable starting. Single cylinder engines are also common among the launch fraternity and if one of these engines stops in the wrong position it usually needs some judicious kicking of the flywheel to get it started ahead or astern.  Few things equate to the smug and not so silent glee of the multi-cylinder crews observing single-cylinder brethren, frantically trying to re-start their engine before they either miss the berth or - even better - slice into the putty.  %%

Regards

100 years between engine and boiler.
You can imagine the engine saying to the boiler
'Come on Young Un, Breathe on me'
