Surf Soap Powder TV Commercial........
« on: July 09, 2015, 11:30:16 am »

You might wonder what a TV Commercial for Soap Powder has got to do with Model Lifeboats.....Well back in 1989 the commercial featured a Lifeboat launching down a slipway to the rescue. I can remember seeing this on TV at the time, and wondering which Lifeboat was used for the filming. The Lifeboat only featured for a few seconds, which was too quick to take in any details. The commercial has recently been uploaded onto Youtube, see here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov58kRUmVTo

All is now clear - the Lifeboat was actually a model, which has been put up for sale on ebay. Here are a couple of photos.
The ebay listing is here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Huge-Model-Lifeboat-unfinished-project-Approx-97-x-29-/111704571467?fb_ref=Default&roken=cUgayN&nma=true&si=vLLwrLYaGw9%252FJ%252FqMWWYCuN7jcXM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

It's quite an impressive size - 97" in length.
If anyone knows anything more about the model, or the making of the commercial, i would love to hear from you.

I wonder what it cost originally.

Don't think it was sold, £ 1200 was the starting price , the site shows Zero Bidders.

Sorry, you are correct, Sir - I saw that the auction had ended and assumed it had sold.

I still think it is cheap when you consider the man-hours it must have taken to build. You would need a fair size pond to sail it though.

Dave.

I am fairly sure this model was in a commercial modelmakers over near Langley in Berkshire ( only a few miles away from pinewood studios, )
it lived there in reception area gathering dust for a long long time, - I did some freelance work for this firm and always admired the model as I went in and out of the building

the ebay seller is stated as Thame in oxon which is only a 40 minute drive  up the m40 from Langley so I think it may well be the same model....
I would love to know if it was sold ....and where it is now

Thanks, but there is no way i would want to buy it! Can you imagine the logistics of getting it to a lake and actually launching it? You would need a custom trailer to transport it, and then how would you lift it into the water? It must weigh well over 100kg by my calculations {-)
If anyone does get it working i would love to see it though!

The real boat shown in the commercial was the 47' Watson 'Frederick Edward Crick', O.N. 970, ex Lowestoft, and I've an idea it was launched down the Penlee slipway for the commercial, although that's the model at the beginning.

I want it! (can't afford it, but I want it...)
