Model Boats Mag
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:00:50 pm »

Just received the December issue in post today as a subsciber. Reading inside i see that the price is going up and it states that subscibers also receive the 100 pagespecial edition. The question i have is should i have received two mags last month one as the standard generally available edition plus the one special which i did receive. I seem to remember that there was mention on two copies but may have been wishfull thinking.

Model Boats has 13 issues a year of which the one published towards the end of October is the 'Winter Special'. The publication dates are adjusted throughout the year to even out the on sale dates. If you check on the Model Boats website you will see that each issue has the publication dates listed. It's a sort of 'Lunar Cycle' really with the average spacing between issues being 4 weeks instead of a calendar month. So there are 12 regular monthly issues plus the Winter Special added during the Autumn.

Yes the price has gone up a bit but so has inflation. I write for MB so I am a little biased, but I think you will find that the combination of 13 issues a year, plus smaller typeface means that MB actually offers a lot more content than the competition plus at least 6 free plans a year. Not bad value in my view, especially if you are a subscriber.

The extent to which you prefer one magazine over the other depends upon whether the balance of content in one magazine appeals to you more than the other, but at the moment the sales figures show that MB is well ahead of the competition.

We are lucky in that the market currently supports two independent magazines covering model boating with all the variety that offers. How long that situation will continue in the longer term remains to be seen.

The other Colin!

I like model boats Magazine and have a large collection there is only one complaint and that is with the shinny covers that slide all over the place when you try to stack them ,and the occasional way it is put together (not stapled but glued) you cannot leave it open on a desk as it closes all the time,
a good offer for subscription would be a free folder as I now object to the price for one that is half a size to big and takes up to much space.
the magazine content is fine and balances out over the year with content.

Peter,

Do you remember the non shiny covers back in the 1990s - horrible! Things have progressed since then.

The 'glued' issues are what is known as 'perfect bound' and are normally only used for the occasional extra special issues which are intended to be 'bookazines'. Mine seem to stay open OK though.

I agree regarding the magazine storage folders. I keep all my mags in files similar to these: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50022354/ although you can find lots of alternatives if you look around locally. I find the plastic ones are the best and hold 12 issues easily.

I have some of the holders from Ikea the problem is as you say they hold 12 issues easy, at one time the folders That model boats sold fitted nicely and where only half the width of the plastic or the ones supplied now. when you have large collection of model boats and the other mag it takes a lot of space and when they are far to wide.

Thre are other holders apart from the ones from Ikea which I used as an example. There are plenty of others which take up less space if you look around,

Of course a much cheaper idea is to lay the magazine flat on a bookshelf  :-)), two years worth of mags only take up approx 4" in height, or if you are a young 'un 100mm, plus you will save on petrol costs by not having to travel to collect a folder(s) from Ikea, Smith's or the like  :}

I paid my subscription in August & have yet to receive anything. I have contacted them two times to no avail. For sure I will never again deal with them, they are just plain incompetent. They sure took my credit card payment in a hurry though. Mick B.
