Difference HMS Norfolk v HMS Argyll
« on: October 10, 2011, 02:03:07 pm »

Hi all,

Anybody know the differences between the 90 HMS Norfolk and the 2010 HMS Argyll? I should have taken the option when I 1st got the plans to swap them...but I never, more fool me.

I initially purchased the plans for HMS Norfolk and got going with my build but I want to do HMS Argyll so without re purchasing a full set of plans etc does anybody know the differences?

Likelihood is a purchase of the 1:192 plans as a reference, wish they did them in A3, that would do...

well howway man Dicky man, are you not going to tell him the correct difference between the two ships - okay - Norfolk when she was first built the helicopter flight deck was built with grooves in to facilitate easy transport of the helicopter from the flight deck into the helicopter hangar.   It was found though that this modification of the grooves was more of a hindrance than help so they were scrapped and never used on any more of this class of ship.   Jacobin's plans /or first published plans of the Norfolk showed these on the flight deck.  Now if he wants to build the Argyle she was never built with this modification - she has just a standard flight deck.   Also after HMS Argyle's last modifications she would have the go-faster aerofoil or the trim tab welded to the stern to increase her fuel economy.   No doubt there are more modifications and I know someone on this forum who is a rear admiral in the French Navy - he will have more info I am sure.

Thanks Dicky

Thanks Bluebird, I already have the trim tab on the stern, so apart from fittings the actual superstructure is the same as Norfolk?? (The nuts n bolts of the differences I can get from a library of photos I have)

Lookin at a small version of the Jecobin plans for Argyll I see the modified flight deck you refer to, but your saying she never actually had that fitted, so I can safely follow the Norfolk plans for that?

Afraid I have a nice pic of the Argyll, taken from her port quarter in about 2006, unfortunately it is a TIF image of 99 mb and is impossible to upload. But looking at her stern she is one of the 6 modified for the new then towed sonar array. As I remember seeing them then on an almost daily occurance the main difference was the stern and the fitting of the supposed stealth 4.5 turret. There was then 2 possibly 3 different types of transoms then.

Hope this pic is of interest, I took it some years ago, about 2005.
