Dear Friends

My name is Tomas Leijon and I live in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2007 I made boat trip with a Wavemaster from Denmark to Sweden. This was an 50 years-aniversiry for the first time that this (our blue ribbon) trip was made with a model boat. The boat used by me was the sister boat also built in 1957 for the record attempt. If you are interested I can supply some pictures from the event.

Next project is to go to Finland. This is a MUCH longer distance and worse sea conditions. For this i am planning to use a true replica of the Miss Edee that crossed the english channel in 1950.

I am looking for plans (or a kit) for this boat. I am not sure if there ever were plans published? If not, I am very interested in the half size version that I know was sold as a kit. Is there any one of you that can help us with this information or plans?

I for one would really like to see some photos of the event and I really wish you luck with the Miss Edee build too, an iconic boat, though I've not heard of plans being available I'm sure someone here might know ! After 60 years, my memory is certainly not what it was, but my father knew George Honnest-Redlich as they were both radio engineers.
I faintly remember him saying that Miss Edee was a one off, but I could be wrong.

Long ago I had more information on the trip but unfortunatly now gone.

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry that I have not answered your questions erlier but I have been away in work again (UAV pilot). Anyway, Yes I found the web page with the nice article about Miss Edee, in fact thats how I found this web page! I will try to get in touch with the editor as you mentioned and se what I can find from there.

Is it really no one out there that has got a kit or model of the half scale version? I don't know what it was called as a model but it is mentioned in an OLD boat magazine that I have somewhere.

I will have a word with the author of the Swedish magazine "Allt om Hobby" (all about hobbies) and se if I may copy the article about my adventure with the Wavemaster.

When I have got enough information to build a Miss Edee replica I will probably install a Honda GX engine. I have converted several of them for different applications and they are quiet, runs on air (VERY low fuel consumption) and have a very low wibration curve.

What distance is your next trip to Finland ? If plans for Miss Eedee dont turn up could you design a similar "look-alike" or enlarge a known good sea-keeping design ? Keep us informed please, I like the distance record attempts.

The trip to Finland is about 38km (Dover-Calais is about 33km) if I go for the island "Åland" on the Finnish vest coast. With the Honda engines the fuel consumption is not a problem. I will try to find the ad for the half scale boat this weekend. Maybe it is easier to find drawings or a kit of this to enlarge to original scale.

Does anyone of you know any of these kits?

In 1952 Miss Eedee made the crossing including passing through a fog bank from Dover to Calais in nine and half hours using only a single ED 5cc diesel The R/C I believe was an early ED reed unit, notoriously temperamental.

You can chug up and down Loch Ness with any thing from a coal burner to petrol if it is 1:1 scale
Is it also allowed with models ?

No problem Ned , right of access and all that. British Waterways control the canal of course. Might be different if it was in England, I dont know. Seems smaller lakes like Windermere have restrictions on models.

Hello again!

Thank's to your information and mails I now know a lot more about the scaled down kit version of the channel crossing boat. This was named Miss E.D. 2, having a length of 36" and a beam of 10". If I could find a kit, a model or a set of plans for this boat it would be easy to build the replica of the big one for my attempt at crossing the Baltic sea. Any one out there has has a clue where to find anything of these?

There is a re-print of the advertisment in the radio Modeller Magazine of the period which gives the log of the Channel crossing. It also says the model was 5ft x 2ft , 70lbs in weight and "police launch type". I have just got an answer from them and unfortunately non of them could help with more information. I guess that my hope is to find a Miss ED 2 as a kit, drawing or second hand boat. Do you know if anyone has one laying around?

Does anyone have a suggestion on any other forums that might be a good try?

I have this from the front page of "Radio Control for Models" Book 1968

States " The cover photograph shows "Miss E. Dee" undergoing her initial trials at Richmond Park, Surrey, in preperation for her 15 miles run on the Thames from Richmond to the South Bank Festival site. The trip was arranged with the co-operation of the "Festival of Britain" authorities.
This boat subsequently crossed the English Channel.

Wouldn't take a lot to modify Vic Smeeds "Kingfisher" design to represent Miss ED2. The ED junior on the same page of the Model Engine News photo is a direct lift of the Adamcraft Seaplane tender.

Hello all

The search continues. I need a few more replies before I can put an ad to buy a second hand Miss E.D.2 or drawings. Since you have helped me with links were I found information and dimensions on the little boat I thought that I should compare the dimensions with my trusty old Wavemaster. The length and width are about identical! Hmmm, a quick look on the pictures of the channel boat and the bow is just about identical as well!

Since I have used the Wavemaster to travel from Denmark to Sweden and the boat happily worked that bad sea I would not mind to use that proven hull design, scale it up and just make a new "Miss Edee" top to it. One of you guys out there offered me a set of plans for the Wavemaster and I have sent you a personal message. I can allways take messures on my boat but a set of drawings saves a lot of time. I will in that case make a CAD drawing of the design and send it to a friend of mine who has a CNC milling machine to make his aircraft kits. I will propably make it out of aircraft grade plywood for the strength.

I just got a package from Graupner with two sets of their biggest waterjets since I plan to use that on the boat. The reason is simple, after my record run from Denmark to Sweden there where basically no prop left! There is a lot of debri in the ocean waves and that simply destroys the prop blades. We also found out that the sea is full of crap that falls from big boats! So one of the lessons learned was, no rudder that stops the boat because things get hang up there and no outside prop because it hits things. The water jets also do have a reverse function that is good if you run into something nasty.

Any more suggestions?

A fascinating thread. I'm a private pilot and have flown the route from Stockholm to Helsinki several times. It's a very cold dark sea indeed! I'm sure you've already considered this, but a starting point outside the Vasa museum and a finish alongside the fabulous sailing clipper Pommern in Mariehamn would be fitting.

I'm sorry not to be able to offer any help regarding Miss ED but I'm deeply puzzled about that letter from Mr Peter Hill of Souldrop, Bedfordshire. I grew up in that tiny village and wonder if I knew him without realising the model boating connection.

In the Pathe film they show six in the chase boat towing another boat behind. Was the extra boat insurance?
