small explosions and model boats
« on: November 29, 2011, 04:54:07 pm »

I had a problem with some pesky pigeons making a mess , normally i would get the gun and shoot them but these were in an area that i could not do so .
So an alternative solution was to hang a string of crow scarer's in place and a visit last night revealed no pests  :-)) .
But now i have a small quantity of crow (bangers) scarer's  left over and after a few experiments (boy's will be boy's) i found out that they make great depth charges and the question was put to me
"why dint you blow up one of your derelict boats" , %) now this got me thinking .
As i have a barge thats not the best and was heading off to the bin this could be an opportunity .
But before i go any further i have to ask about H&S and any other restrictions , after all we are dealing with explosives ?? .

My other question is ant one got any ideas about making an igniter for the fuse , one of the lads at the club mentioned a piece of fuse wire a battery and a capacitor ,
but i was thinking about a jet rocket motor igniter , or is that the same thing.
Ideas ideas ideas please.

use the rocket motor igniter. im not sure where you suppose to get fuse wire from.

Old fashioned ironmonger.  There are still some around.  Or just thin wire, which is what fuse wire really is.  A nice chunky electrolytic will probably store enough energy to blow a fuse, you just need a transistor that will survive the current longer than the fuse.  There may well be suitable circuits on model railway sites - years ago capacitor discharge units were commonly used to operate the solenoid type point motors.

That would be a REALLY old fashioned hardware shop.  Probably not in the UK.

I made a CDU for railway points, circuit out of a book by Penfold I think his name was, not difficult, I used veroboard and bits from Maplins,

One Circuit here as an example.

:embarrassed: i think rocket igniters will do it. There very simple just need a bit of current passing threw them and boom!!

There is quite a lot of discussion and advice on Mayhem about using explosives and pyrotechnics. Use the search faciity from the main page on those terms.

Quite apart from the potential danger, unless you are proposing to do this on private land to which the public has no access and there is no danger to wildlife then I would forget it as you are unlikely to get permission from any of the authorities and could face prosecution.

thank's lads , yes the fuse is the wire type , i was hoping to wrap it around the taper fuse on the banger and when the current is applied the wire would ignite the taper and blow the banger .
I will experiment with a 12v battery and some 3A wire and a piece of taper .
I could use the rope fuse that comes with the bangers but the timing is a bit hit and miss , a bit like watching a kettle boil , you know it will eventually  O0 .

Colin , very good advice , yes it will be on private land as the Goole site is not open to public access and the gated can be locked if nessarsary .

Having had more than a little experience with miniature pyrotechnics, I think your first duty is to your own safety. You will be closest to the model and it is best not to blow up crow scarers while leaning over your model. I would fit a small arming/test switch in circuit, one side feeding directly to your fuse wire, and the other side routed through a Grain of Wheat bulb or a cheap buzzer. This will allow you to test the continuity of the circuit while not providing enough amps to blow the fuse. Only when you are ready to send you barge to Davy Jones's locker should you throw the switch. Then energize it by which ever method you have chosen. Good luck and make sure someone is filming it :-))

Just done a couple of experiments with some wire strands and a 12v battery ,
wrapped a piece of wier strand around a piece of taper and applied the power ,
pppffizz it worked . So the next thing is to make up some rig's as i might make them as out riggers for water explosions .

Strange but true Malcolm, you can buy Fusewire from Homebase/B&Q :-)) How do I know,a card of it came as part of the Kitshack RTTL kit. I think you were supposed to make one of the aerials with it  %%

Two ideas to contribute here

1. a small battery will ignite a ball of wire wool quite wonderfully I believe
2. I saw a piano blown up with dynamite - yes it went bang. Next the same charge and a couple of bags of flour added - Kaboom Owzat!!!
that's why flour and grain mills/silos are so dangerous.

This subject has gone on long enough, and is now branching into details.

The fact that it is dangerous and not a healthy subject for a Family Forum leads us to believe it should now stop.  The subject has already been covered once.
