Saito boiler, burner, and engine removal and repair questions.
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:37:16 pm »

Here are the questions. Looking at these pictures what is the easiest and best (or a combination of the 2) to remove and repair these. I am pretty sure at this point the boiler has asbestos on it, so some insight on removal (safely) and disposal of that. Also what things to look out for fragile areas, know issues, things like that.

This Hercules is more that 25 years old has been run a total of 4 times with in 2 years of its being built. The rest of its life it has been on shelf and when it started to fall apart it was put into storage. Just pulled it of the shelf in storage and decided that I want to try and return it to its former glory. The idea is to fix, repair, and if absolutely necessary replace parts.

Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

Chris

disconnect the engine from the propshaft, and disconnect the rc equipment, take the engine and boiler out and clean it up. look for any corrosion, you might try and get the boiler pressure tested, but I'd start by bench testing the nice Saito plant. I dont know anything about asbestos, but I guess use gloves and don't breath of the dust in.
After you've done that replace the old Rc equipment with modern 2.4ghz, and head off to the pond.  :-))

Boiler top looks to be corroded already, brown splodges look like pitting. Would suggest everything to the left of the engine is removed, polished and put into a display case and a Copper boiler and pressure tested gas tank and burner obtained.

Presumably you're planning to remove the asbestos. As Logoman says, avoid inhaling the dust- it can cause mesothelioma, which may take up to thirty years to materialise. You must have similar regulations in the U.S. as we do over here. If you seek official advice before starting, you might be told to have it removed professionally - which will be very expensive (and in my opinion, unwarranted for such a small quantity).

My approach to this problem (I have dealt with it on two occasions) is to coat the asbestos in something sticky (I used PVA but something like honey would do the trick) and wear a mask while cutting it out. All the material removed, including anything like steel wool, if used, should be put in a stout plastic bag, sealed and labelled.

In the U.K, certain domestic waste disposal sites have facilities for receiving asbestos. (The arrangements vary according to the local authority.) Perhaps I was lucky but I just telephoned the nearest such site and they were happy to receive it.
