What prop tube and shaft length for 1/12th Severn
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:28:28 pm »

Hi all,

Despite alot of help and insight into length of Tube and Shaft, There seems to be some confusion as to The Severn being Exposed shafts or full length.

After researching and getting some useful pic's and link's She's Exposed Shaft's

I'm trying to find out what The shaft tube is and what the overall shaft length is. On a 1/12th scale

Hi Russ

Picture of Spirit of Guernsey, 17 - 04

Also if you look at the self rightning pic's http://www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk/selfrighting.htm >you can clearly see exposed shafts on roberts boat.
Also spoke with Adrian at speedline and check Markus's 1/16th build thread again shows exposed shaft's.

So what i'm trying to find out is how long the tube has to be and what the overall shaft length is allowing for A frame, prop and Coupling.

Hi Adam

What you see there is a stainless section of prop tube, the actual propellor shaft is contained within, I think anyway?

Thanks

Russ,

I my honest opinion and going by info avaliable from various sources i'd have to say that the Severn is the same as the Arun Exposed shafts.

Also if you look close as the pic you can see various marks that would make you think it is indeed a shaft not tube.

Surely Adrian and the Chap Robert whom scratch built using Rnli plan's would not get such a thing incorrect??

Anyway from this angle i dont think it's Prop tube

well, I have to say, that when I asked the Coxs'n Buz White MBE .a mate of mine..of Guernsey Lifeboat, who is also a qualified ship and boat surveyer, as well as a boat builder by trade....and I asked him on sunday morning last, about the subject.the answer came back.......and I quote, "exposed mate from the point of exit from the hull main gland seals to the A frame............who am I to argue with a qualified ship surveyer???

By the way he has a lovely Jet ski for sale any one fancy it...9K..you'd just have to sail it back from Guernsey.

Hi Adam,

For my 1/16th Severn I've ordered some special Tubes and shafts from Gundert (http://www.gundert.de/kata1.htm#Gundert%20Catalog - see "Drive units for direct connection of electric motors").

Tube: 120mm (end of tube approx 205mm meassured from the rear; 273mm converted to 1/12 scale)
Shaft: 250mm

Converted to 1/12 it should be
--> Tube: 160mm
--> Shaft: 333.3mm

The advantage of these shafts/tube is that motor and shaft is in one line and you do not need any coupling.

Here a picture of the tube:

I hope this information helps.

Cheers,
Markus

   I have a couple of pals who have each built a 1/12th Severn, both of the Falmouth boat Richard Cox Scott. I have e mailed them and await their replies, re the propshafts.I will hopefully post their replys as to whether they have exposed shafts or not, on here when I receive them

   I have had a reply back from one of my pals who has built a  Severn, and I post the relevent section.....
     "Now, the Severn  is a big old beast and I had initially bought a pair of wheelchair motors from Robert, the same as he's used on his boat. However his Severn must be lighter than mine (might be interesting to weigh them both one day) and whatever I did I couldn't get the boat up on the plane. So I bit the bullet , took out the conventional motors and went brushless. At the same time I swapped from Lead acid to F Cells (on Phil Locke's advice), and followed both Phil and Robert's lead and fitted with huge 3" (75mm) mid pitch props. The boat was transformed and rose up onto the plane beautifully. Not scale size props, true, but ones that worked and made the boat go.
 The original shafts were with an exposed run from the hull to the A bracket which for the 55mm props was fine and is to scale. The tubes on the full size boat stop on exit from the hull"
 So here is yet more evidence that the prop shafts were of the exposed type!
