What ESC should I buy
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:36:45 am »

Hi
Being new to the world of model boating after spending many years of making steam engines as a model engineer, I have decided to give building a boat with an electric motor as the power source ago.
I have decided on MMMs Rosegarth, with the T12 motor, as recommended by them.   I need to know what ESC controller to fit, I will be running a Futuba 6 channel RC set up.

Looking forward to your expert replies.

Many thanks

Any speed controller that has reverse and can handle the Amps pulled by the motor. You might like to consider Mtroniks or Action's offereings as well as Electronize. All are equally suitable for your purposes.

Thanks for your quick and really helpful replies, in your opinion, would it be worth buying an ESC with more amperage, i.e. a 30 A instead of a 15 a model ??

Depends on what prop you run on the T12. but have run a data logger on my ones and with a prop shop 3" 4 blade they average around 2.5A with a peak of 10A on startup and direction change!

Ive run 15A Electronize for years on with the 6 that I own and have NEVER had an issue with that setup....but the choice is yours and understand where you are concerned...guess what made my decision was I wanted and ESC with a BEC.

I will be running a 70mm 4 blade left hand brass prop, supplied by Propshop.

I dont really totaly agree with that, considering they cost about a 3rd what you pay here theyre well worth the money, sure you might get one dud in 4 as there quality controll isnt as good as it should be but hey at the prices you can pick em up you cant really complain. Also half the ones sold here come from China and they just bump the price up haha.

Hi Glenboy, I am surprised no one mentioned ACTion Electronics, they make very high quality esc's & many other bits as well & give great service. I am sure if you call or email (better) Dave at ACTion he can help you. Mick B.

ACTions P94 would be ideal for your tug. This will give you four different ways to control your boat.

I have 3 of these and they are excellent.

ACTion also do other good quality speed controllers.

They also offer an excellent back up service and wiring diagrams on their web site.

Dave is very helpful if you have any problems.

Would recommend P79S Mulltipole or P93 Multicontroller for T12 motor (single screw).

I'd rather pay 3 times the amount for an electronize or an Action where I could return it without problem than tear my hair out and think I was robbed by buying something that I would have no hope of returning and getting a new one or my money back once used. >>:-( >>:-(

Sorry please ignore my suggestion, the P94 is excellent for twin screws, not a lot of good for single screws. Next time I will wear my glasses.

I would still go for an ACTion one for quality and service alone.
