Brass D section
« on: February 10, 2012, 04:59:08 pm »

Hi.

I have some 3mm ( 1/8th ) D section in a coil that I want to use to make the rubbing strip for my Riva.

The brass is very springy almost like spring steel. I need to straighten it out into 2 x 1 metre lengths so that it can be drilled for fixing and then chrome plated.

My question is this, what is the correct way to anneal this brass so that I can easily bend it to shape, ( a very slow curve ) and drilled  without affecting to chroming process ?

Thanks.

Mike.

Mike,

I anneal brass by heating to a cherry red colour (no more or it might melt), then dropping straight into cold water. This will soften the brass ok.

I cant be sure, but I cant think of any reason why this should create a problem for subsequent chrome plating.

Hi Mike, Ian is correct, that is how I do it too. However be very careful as it turns to liquid in the blink of an eye if over heated. You should have no problems chroming it later as far as I know. Mick B.

Many thanks to you both.

Once it's been straightened and drilled, is it possible to re harden it a little prior to chroming ?

As far as I know, brass will re harden only by mechanical working (machining, deforming, hammering etc) which clearly is no use to you.

If you google 'hardening brass' you will find a number of sites with comments about this.
