The Skoda Superd.......is!
« on: February 19, 2012, 01:54:29 pm »

I just have to take a moment to sing the praises of my wife's choice of new company car. The Skoda Superb Estate. It may be a silly name but it lives up to it.....espceially if, like me, you have big hobbies  :embarrassed:

Today we all went to the lake in Barrow. Four up and a Marblehead in the boot. We all fit with room to spare:

I think one would probably get something as large as an 80" Corvette in there!  <:(

But the size isn't the best bit! No. Skoda have included a built in yacht restraint system in the boot! I kid you not! Metal rails in the floor and a post-office-queue-style "tensa" barrier thingy specifically designed to hold boat stands nice and solidly!

At least the "how're you going to fit it in the car?" question is dead in the (proverbial) water!  {-)

I had the saloon version of this car a couple of years ago. Brilliant car. A stunningly huge boot (with rail-mounted bag-holder-thingy, ideal for trips to Tescos - or small boats) and - like I see there - a flap into the rear seats "for your skis". Which fit in a collapsible bag, to prevent water dripping onto the sumptuous leather interior. "Or for longer hulls", I thought, mischievously.

The car was superb - cruise control, a joy to drive, a pile of gadgets, a huge fuel tank and a million miles per gallon of diesel, for example - until its first major service. "We really ought replace the timing belt, Sir. And while we're at it, the oil pump belt." All this stuff is hidden under a bonnet under the bonnet, so the owner doesn't have to look at such monstrosities as an engine.* "Fine, go ahead." I said.

One £500 bill later, we decided to sell up and buy something cheaper to maintain.

But I hope you enjoy the vehicle - I'd have one again. (If I win the lotto).

Andy

* Maybe all modern cars have stuff like this. I won't know until they're about ten years old.

Luckily, as a company car, we don't have to worry about that side of things. All I need to be aware of is that we went on holiday last week with a fully loaded car the size of the Bismark, and it averaged 60mpg.....as well as carrying boats  :-))

I don't know how many miles yours had done Andy but renewing cam and other belts at around the 70k mark is quite common (and expensive) which is why a lot of people decide to sell their cars just before the mega service comes up!

Of course, that £500 is a main agent price complete with main agent price inflation to cover the cost of fitted carpets in the showroom and huge plate glass windows.  Divide by about two or three to get a proper garage price and its not really so bad.

I have a company Octavia Greenline 1.6 d
I hate it!!! it is gutless. it has a steeped boot floor so getting stuff in and out is a pain and that is after you have lifted it over the boot seal.
I has no spare wheel. Just a bottle of junk and a 12v compressor to try and blow the tyre up with.
It is suppose to do 69mpg but i have never seen it do more then 54 mpg ave But the tax man loves it and i get to keep some of the tax they normally take cause it is "Green".
So far 17,000 i have had the bonnet relaces catch give up so not bad on the breakdown side.

Give me my old Toyota Avnenis back any day!!

Ah, now this one's replaced a Toyota.....a Prius in this case. The new diesel does better to the gallon than the hybrid ever did.  :o
Isabelle used to average 52mpg in the Prius on the regular commute, now it's 60mpg  %%
In terms of comfort though, there's no comparrison between the two....the Superb is much, much better. It's also very, very long. With the driver's seat where I want it (and I'm 6'2"), I can comfortably sit in the seat behind and stretch my legs out.   :-))  If my Dad had had a car like this it'd have saved me much joint pain as a teenager.  <*<

If I decided to start a mini cab business then I'd probably have one! Medway is filled with the things. I was astonished to ride in one a while ago & nearly fell out the door when I found it had wind up window handles! I thought they went out with the ark.
Having said that my wife has a Vauxhall Astra as a co. car & that is completely evil. Nasty to drive & the garages are still as dire as when I had Vauxhalls as Co. cars 25 years ago.
I can cram yachts (marbleheads) & the kitchen sink in the Jeep which is one of the reasons I bought it.

I have the baby brother of one of these - the Fabia Estate, and it never ceases to amaze me about the amount of boat junk I can get in it.
For a small, relatively "cheap" car, I thinks it's great value.
No problems at all so far after three years and servicing considerably cheaper than my previous Ford Focus.
