Cheddar boiler
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:24:56 pm »

Hi ,water gauge not filling on my puffin boiler suspected a blockage on the bottom fitting , unfortunately got the top fitting out ok but the bottom one broke in the bottom boiler bush the thread size is 1/4 - 32  ,i intend to drill out with a 5.5mll , drill and re tap a 1/4-32 thread .  would this be o/k or would it be necessary to drill the bush out and silver in a new boiler bush , kind regards Allan

it will have properly happend because water has been left in it , they have a habit of getting limescale on the back of the fitting then wont unscrew it attacks the brass in the fitting as well , I would drill it out and try and implode the bit left in with a sharp scriber, don't try and remove the boiler bush it will be made of bronze  so it wont have corroded and you will need a massive amount of heat to re silver solder It back in and that could effect other joints if you cannot fix it that way go to the next size up of fitting and re tap that size.

Thanks Peter, managed to get it out as you suggested, thread not bad,I have ordered a new water gauge, what would you recommend using on the thread to fit it i have ptfe tape or loctite threadlocker or stud and bearing fit i also have crushable washers, also on a other note i want to try and connect a water pump to the boiler is it possible to fit a non return valve that will connect to the bottom of the water gauge fitting to top up the boiler all the other bushes are used up and nearer the top of the boiler. kind regards Allan

have you got a picture of the end of the boiler so I can tell which one it is , there where a few boilers supplied over the years for the puffin. I have seen them tapped in to the sight glass but I don't like the idea much.
I use soft locktite when I go out to my workshop Ill check the number, the copper washers should be annealed before use just heat till cherry red and let cool
do you know about Clevedon-Steam, http://www.clevedonsteam.co.uk/

Thanks Peter, yes i know clevedon thats where i ordered the new water gauge from last night, the locktite i usually use is 243,good advise about the copper washers,If you go to the section (STEAM) page 2 about10columns up from bottom you will find heading Hemmens max 11  their is a couple of pictures of the said boiler,in the 1 st pic you can just see the pressure gauge and steam whistle  both these bushes are at the same hight approx 1-1/4 down from top of boiler, 2 pic shows the water gauge and steam take of, apart from the safety valve they are the only boiler bushes in the boiler ,the bottom watergauge bush is the only one which is in the bottom half of the boiler hope this makes sense, regards Allan

I had thought for some reason it was a horizontal boiler not a vertical yes you will have to use the bottom of the water column, it may have the advantage of keeping it clean inside, you could also use a in line clack if that is better for you, just use a back to back connector to replace the standard bolt.

Thanks Peter ,i Had thought of using a in line clack as you suggest ,not quite sure what you mean regarding the back to back connector, i presume you mean remove the bottom plug on the water gauge and connect to that , thanks again for all you're help regards Allan
