Sorry - no Ebay listings allowed on Mayhem.

Why not??

I'm interested in why this particular rule exists Martin :-))

Mark,
We had several problems when items were advertised on ebay and on Mayhem.
There was doubt who bought the item and where from.
The sellers of course took the highest offer which led to several members having their offer accepted but actually sold on ebay which led to bad feeling on here.

Bob,

That I can understand :-))

However, I was thinking, (like some other forums), why not allow people to advertise an ebay auction - not being offered for sale on here, just on ebay {:-{

As Bob said, we had problems in the past with ebay item advertised on Mayhem, eg, 'stop the ebay auction, I'll buy it. Actually no,
I've changed my mind.' or 'It nothing like what you said!'... which is also why items for sail on Mayhem Must have accompanying
photo of said item.

I didn't spot that rule, so apologies. However, surely, the banning of this doesn't help anyone?

Can't you make a special topic for Ebay sales and place a simple disclaimer (like- don't come bitching at Mayhem etc) and with some 'rules', such as 'If you advertise on Ebay, don't place the same item here while the auction is running'?

It seems a shame that your members can't be made aware of bargains and products coming up for auction. But, hey, it's your forum!   :-)

"It seems a shame that your members can't be made aware of bargains and products coming up for auction"

Actually Quite a few forum members on here regularly troll Ebay for offers, nice models , good deals and not so good deals and as such there are currently 2 threads on this forum for members to announce anything that they find on Ebay as long as it is not something that they  are selling.

Putting something like (like- don't come bitching at Mayhem etc) will never work.. :}

These subject of these ebay auctions wouldn't be advertised on Mayhem though {:-{

Especially, (as I understand it), that non model boat items aren't allowed in the for sale section - these ebay auctions could be 'non model boat related' for model fund raising but due to IMHO a stupid rule I wouldn't be allowed to tell anyone on here about it >:-o

Mark,
You mean you would want a topic something like "Seen on EBAY - Worth a Look!?!"
The one in "Bargain Basement?"

Bob,

No, that's for people to 'point the way' towards a model boating relevant auction.

The best way to explain is to give an example;

I have something for sale to do with model boats, however I can't just advertise it, (with a piccy), and then say "I don't know what it's worth - make me an offer, if it sounds good it's yours" because 'it's against the rules'.  So my option now is to stick it on evilbay with the same statement(ish) - however I now can't publish the auction on here - because it's 'against the rules' even though here is one of the best places that gives a good chance of it being sold.

Now for an example of how daft these rules can be - a while back someone was selling a set of plans and was warned by a mod that he must include a piccy or the advert would be removed >>:-(
Now going strictly by the letter of the law, he's not allowed to show a piccy of the plans without the copyright holders permission, (unless he's drawn them himself - which would no doubt incur the same mod's wrath for 'trading' without permission  <*< )

It would be worse if I was selling something 'non-model-boating' as then I'm not allowed to advertise it on here at all - what's wrong with having a miscelaneous sales section?? and yet it might, IMO, be of use to a modeller and therefore have a valid place on the sales board here.

Do you see my frustration with 'the rules' in the sales board now Bob??

Holland 1:32 Model for sale.  Almost New.

Link Removed!

I know, it's skating round the problem!   :D

Nice try! - Martin   :P

How about on Mayhem

For Sale at x .......... if no firm offer made within 72hrs going to ebay and withdrawn from Mayhem
I don't really see how you can fairly have an item offered for sale here and simultaneously on ebay

Re general goods - well there's no end of places to sell them.

Thanks Dave.

You want to sell something on ebay, fine.... there are many more millions of buyers on ebay than Mayhem.
If you want to sell an item for sale here (for Free) to a very specific target audience, that's fine too.

Some members offer their items for sale here on Mayhem first, if it doesn't reach the asking price, they then
pay to sell it on ebay.

Why should we allow ebay sales to be promoted on Mayhem for free?

                 Ebay is ebay and Mayhem is Mayhem.

(" ... other auctions sites are also available. Always read the small print. Offers subject to availability. See in store for details!.")

Martin, it appears that you haven't read my post at all - to address your underlined statement;

if I advertise an ebay auction on Mayhem - it's still not free to me - ergo, I don't understand your point at all {:-{

If you're determined to ignore my questions, please tell me - then I will know not to question either your or any mods decisions or statements :((

so if you put an item on ebay and it sells it cost's you so if you want to put it on mayhem as well you should have to pay the same amount as the site has to be paid for and it would be a source of income , if it's such a good place to sell why should it be free.

Anyway It's Martins site and if he doesent want ebay ad's cluttering up the site then he has the final say.

I did say this ages ago...a commission on every sale could be paid to any registered marine related charity...the RNLI, HMS Alliance appeal, etc etc. Trouble is, as it was pointed out to me by (for the life of me, I cannot remember which mod it was, but it doesn't really matter) it would mean someone sitting down at a keyboard and doing the maths, paying the money in and generally looking after that side of things.

I think we should be damn grateful to Martin (and no, I'm not creeping here...) that we are allowed the privilege of selling our items for free.

Mark,
I have read and reread your post.
The answer is very simple as has been stated by Martin.
If you consider this site is the best target audience you have been given the opportunity to use the "For Sale" board.
If however you want to sell on ebay feel free to use that.
The rules have evolved over years after problems have been encountered.
We (Martin and the Moderators) don't want or have the time to sort out problems arising from advertising the same item in several places and sorting out the problems this CAN bring.
Your posting does in itself show a complete misunderstanding of Mayhem.
It is not Martin or any moderators decision or statement that you are questioning but the Site Rules.
They are there for every member to read.
Rules are not made or changed lightly on Mayhem as so many understand or at least abide by the rules and any change has to be communicated.
I now consider that you have had more than enough time to air your point of view.
The Rules are NOT going to be changed to reflect your point of view.
All you have to do is deal with it in any way you can.
