Two rudders or one
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:33:54 pm »

Looking at the plan of my next build, Bluebird of Chelsea, it has one rudder and two motors. I'm wondering if  two rudders might be better for control.
I'm not bothered about deviating from the original layout. I'll probably have a mixer for the two motors.

Two rudders or one?

Any thoughts?

2 rudders will be better for turning circle.

It's the Model Boats plan, I think I'll go with two rudders no one seems to be against the idea.

The original build article clearly shows two rudders on the model.

My "Bluebird" (at 1:12 scale)built from the 1991 MB "Super-Plan" has 2 rudders, 2 motors and 2ESCs. Running off a 6v supply I can use 1 battery per motor. At 1:12 scale (50") the total weight has to be under 20lb....hence 6v as the batteries are smaller and lighter than the 12v things. still gives ample running time.
If you choose the single rudder option but retaining the twin screw set-up I would advise having the props turning "inwards" to give better flow over the rudder. With the twin rudder set-up, she will turn on a "sixpence". BY.

Not got the Model Boats article(s), just one from Marine Modelling Inter.
Is the MB one from 1991/2?
I think someone in USA is flogging it for about $20 on DVD, on eBay
