old hull made good!
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:22:32 pm »

I was having a clearout of my little boat workshop when I came across this 28" wooden hull which I originally bought a few years ago to make a small boat for my nephew, eventually I have got round to building him one which so far I am pretty happy with.
Just thought I would post some photos from early stages of the build, It is more or less ready now to have a paint job.
I am planning on putting in a 600 motor which will hopefully give it a nice scale speed and wont be too fast for my nephew as he is only just starting out with model boats  ;)

Hope you like it so far!
p.s this is not built from a plan, its just a pigment of my imagination  :-)

Add a spray rail/chine stringer at this stage rather than decide after you've finished it. If he eventually wants to go faster, it will save it digging in on corners.

Think "Hairy Kits" used Obeche but Spruce would be tougher. Glued and pinned wiv Braaass nails. If you look at the forementioned hairy kits, they are fitted at the junction of the side and bottom skin sheeting on the side skin sheeting full length front to back.(Bow to Stern). Idea of them is to stop suction on the edge when cornering by deflecting water out from bottom skin.

  Regards  Ian.

Addendum, If you add one on the joint between the side skin and the deck joint it's called a "Rubbing Strake"  :-))

If you can relocate Dreadstars Crash tender video, you'll see the before and after results.
